AUGUSTA - State and local elected officials including Gov. John Baldacci welcomed the new owner of Sugarloaf/USA and Sunday River ski resorts to Maine with a lobster bake Wednesday.
Michigan-based Boyne/USA is purchasing the resorts in Carrabassett Valley and Newry, respectively, from the soon-to-be-defunct American Skiing Co. for an estimated $77 million.
Boyne is also assuming $2 million of ASC debt as part of the purchase.
Boyne officials made a presentation to Baldacci during the day and were expected to meet with John Richardson, the state's commissioner of Economic and Community Development on Wednesday night, said David Farmer, the governor's director of communications.
"It was a very encouraging meeting, a very promising meeting, according to the governor," Farmer said. "But it was really just a get-to-know-you session - an introduction."
Farmer said Boyne officials seemed pleased to be joining the tourism and recreation scene in Maine. "They recognize that Maine is a quality destination; Maine has a great brand when it comes to outdoor activities," Farmer said.
Boyne owns three Michigan resorts as well as Big Sky in Montana, Brighton in Utah, Crystal Mountain in Washington and Cypress Mountain in British Columbia, Canada, officials from the American Skiing Co. said Tuesday. The company also owns the Skylift Resort in Gatlinburg, Tenn.
