Date(s) Skied: Saturday, 12/15/2007, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Resort or Ski Area: Ski Sundown, New Hartford, Connecticut

Conditions: FGR, LGR, PP

Trip Report: Kid was off with the Grandparents for the weekend, so the wife and I figured that since most of our shopping was done, we'd take a few turns somewhere small and close to see just how good a job the surgeon did on my knee 9 months ago. If anyone in the area blows a joint this season, PM me, have I got a recommendation for you!
We started on the newly opened Tom's Treat. I figured that if I was going to take things slowly, might as well go as slow as humanly possible. And despite any reservations I might've had, this was no treat at all. I could tell immediately that I could do more. 3 runs later it was up to Canyon Run. The conditions overall were relatively good. There were very few scratchy spots, and even those had enough soft, loose powder-like substance around them to prevent them from becoming actual slick spots. After a few runs down the Canyon, we moved-on to Nor'Easter. Nope, no bumps yet but that's fine for now. It has slightly more pitch than Canyon Run and it was good to move slowly through the progression. The last run was down Temptor, and again, despite being later in the afternoon, was pretty free from slick spots and skied well. At the bottom of Temptor I hit the dreaded piles of crud that Sevvie mentioned in her report. No problems, thankfully, but I did notice a little tenderness in the knee after the up/down impact of going through them.
All-in-all it was a very successful day. I convinced the wife that I can indeed go out and ski without needing a ride in the meat-sled. Got her stoked for the season, as she is still pretty green, yet followed me on every run and really started to improve her form. And it looks like the conditions are much better than anticipated. Even the typical clusterf%$^ that occurs on Exhibition wasn't a problem. Ready for our weekend up in the Whites this Thurs!

Great report! Didn't get to ski Saturday but I could definitely see a difference in the snow (just from working at the bottom) between then and Wednesday (when I was last out). You should get your wife out for one of our weekly estrogen nights at Sundown! You can always PM me or MRGisevil for details. And congrats on the knee holding up well!!!

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm working on her. I think once she feels a little more confident, she may head out with the ladies a few times. I got the okay to take the kid with me on the morning of the 24th to stay out of her hair as she prepares, so that's the first step....:spread:

Thanks guys. The best part is that as of today, there still are no residual effects. GAME ON!!!

Hopefully 3 reports early next week. Looks like we're hitting Cranmore for their 70th on Friday, then most likely Attitash on Sat. and either Black Mtn or Wildcat Sunday, conditions determining.

And either Mohawk or Sundown on the morning of the 24th, again, conditions determining.

Well, I have been meaning to try out snowboarding for a while now. If her hesitations are based on falling in front of people, I will rent a snowboard for the night and make a total ass of myself. Then she shouldn't feel too bad if she falls once or twice.

Not so much a fear of looking <foolish> more just being comfortable enough to go solo. I think my little injury last year has her a tad gun shy. I'm sure that will fade as she realizes that she's not even half the idiot that I am.

awesome Paul! I always found the bigger battle to be mental then physical. how's it feeling on day 2? Usually if i push myself too hard, the tenderness shows up on the second day.

Feels perfectly normal. I'm the same, I always feel it more on day 2. I'm pretty surprised at just how well everything went, and yes, I think any and all trepidation I had / still have is mostly mental. The best part is convincing the better half that everything's okay. I should be able to meet-up with youse guys a few times this season.

Come to Sundown Wednesday Paul :)

I'm seriously considering it. The only thing is... I blew my knee out last year at Buttercup a mere 5 days before a week at Sugarbush. It would be just my luck to re-blow it at Sundown the night before heading up to Bartlett.

We shall see.....
