Date Skied: Wendesday 2/3/2010 (evening into night)
Resort or Ski Area: Ski Sundown
Conditions: PP with a few boilerplate spots.
Trip Report: Was in a foul mood while visiting a client yesterday and when I finished early, there was only one thing to do: Go to the Institution! I arrived at 4pm to a LOT of buses in the parking lot. Oh no, I thought. Apparently Wednesday afternoon is when all of the school kids come for racing and ski club. Oh well, I am here -- might as well stay.
Booted up and headed out. The lines weren't as bad as I thought they would be with the amount of people on the hill. Sundown must have a decent uphill capacity for a mountain of it's size. Maybe a couple of minutes was the max I waited for the lift.
The conditions were good. Sundown got a couple of inches the night before and it was sitting on top of a packed powder base. There were a few spots of hardpack/ boilerplate here and there but nothing that would bother me. Somewhere around 6:30 or so, they groomed it all out so I had a few corduroy runs down gunny last night too. I have to admit - I LOVE raging down the Gunbarrel right after it is groomed.
Last night I worked a lot on my technique and then started to try to work on my bump skills. Maybe I should say, my LACK of skills. The Nor'Easter bumps weren't too bad and I seemed to be able to get a little feel in there. The Temptor bumps were brutal. Ok, maybe for the good bump skiers out there they are good, but I just couldn't find a comfortable line. Not so good on a night were I wanted to work on my bump skiing. Then there are the "baby bumps" on Exhibition. I have to admit -- I was enjoying the heck out of those last night. As the night wore on, I was able to look further and further ahead the comfort level grew. Was I popping them like Greg? Uh nope. Was I doing head plants? Nope. I was just weaving my way through -- sometimes semi-pretty, sometimes semi-ugly -- but getting more comfortable. My only complaint with the Exhibition section is that a lot of low skill people go in them and so there were many times where I had to bail out to avoid a fallen snowplower. That kinda stinks when you are really feeling a line but I understand that everyone must learn somewhere. Heck, that is the very reason I was skiing those bumps!
Finished the night at 9 and headed home. The crappy day was completely forgotten and I enjoyed my time at the Institution. Can you ask for more?
