Agree on all of the above. Evelyn gets the six pack loaded quickly! Will be very nice with a little more snow making and a faster chair than the Spear Triple.

Seriously, though. Let's go dark on this little gem. It's a perfect day trip. Love the lodge and the fireplace, the food, and I agree on the bumps. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

only reason I hype it is in hopes the additional skiers brings a HSQ to Spear. ;)

once that happens (and Showboat is a rockstar seeded bumped run) I'll never say a word about Ragged again. ;)

not even a trip report.

What type of trails is your GF up for?

Given your stated criteria, it's Magic and Ragged.

Since you liked Ascutney and Tenney, think about Bromley.

In my experience, the most popular mountains are a mad house on Sunday morning and a ghost town after 12.

Magic is somewhat less intermediate friendly as the snowmaking is more limited and the trails are narrower.

I disagree, Magic has plenty of great cruising terrain. Plus they've done a ton of work to their snowmaking system this year, so the snowmaking coverage should be much improved over the last several years.

True. I went to Magic last season and that was in my 2nd season of snowboarding. Yes there were some trails I did not touch and a couple that were too hard for me, but all the blues and greens were fun and not less "friendly" than your regular blue somewhere else. In fact, you may well find Magic's blues MORE fun because they are more windy than other mountains.

I never noticed the wind. Maybe you go there on days that everyone else is on windhold?

That's another thing to remember - when everyone else is on wind hold, Magic turns!!

Bill I beleive he meant windy as in "turny" not for lack of a better word but since you mentioned wind holds... That basically does not happen as the lift is relatively low to the surface and protected by trees.

Since you mention not going on Saturdays... On Sunday's at Magic lots of families pack up and hit the road early leaving the mountail generally devoid of people... The crowds on Saturdays are very manageable as well. There were only a couple of Saturdays where the line got a little long during peak hours (about 10:30 to 12:00 and 1:30 to 2:30) Even then the trails are not crowded as compared to many other mountains.

Magic might be it for me

As long as they provide some snowmaking for my lower intermediate girlfriend, I will spend my money at Magic. We went last year together and loved it! Tie for first was Berkshire East. With the new lift I bet the lift lines will be even smaller. Just avoid it on big race days.

Magic is a great place for developing skiers. About 1/3 of the mountain is perfect pitched for intermediates. Top to bottom cruisers that never get scraped down or have any traffic. With all the snow making improvements that have been made this summer, I am anxious to see what the mountain looks like this winter. I have never been able to give Magic a 100% recommendation for cruising due to inconsistency of conditions and lack of snow making. With increased snow making, Magic really could rank very high in New England cruising. Perhaps even the lower end of a top ten list.

We had a long talk this afteroon about blues and greens. The misplaced marketing strategy of pitching to an expert niche, worked. It worked all too well. And now it's tough to shake. We walked and FWD on enough trails today to tell you they are in mint shape. I went up with two of the ops crew, they have been busting their butts 6 days a week all year. This place is ready to rock!

With the fan guns all dutifully lined up, the place is ready to roar. I would DEFINITELY bring my greenie family members here this year.

Thanks Billski

I loved Magic, but i'm an expert who skis 120 plus days a season. My girlfriend is going on to her second season. I feel better bringing her to Magic hearing that they will have options for her when she comes. I bought her two new pairs of skis this year K2 Lotta Luvs, and Salomon Lady 's and a pair of custom foamed boots with custom cork footbeds. The improved equipment will allow her to grow and challenge more terrain. I am stoked for Magic!

ummm, what marketing. anything magic has done marketing wise the last 10 years has been pretty insignificant in people's decision making of whether to ski there or not. I think word of mouth, these forums and the overall lack of knowledge by the general skiing population led people to believe magic is an experts only mountain. or even an OPEN mountain.

In the 80's, while it was still considered to be a somewhat difficult ski area, there were plenty of families and beginners skiing there. so much so that there was an entire area with its own dedicated lift for them. losing that probably makes it tougher to get true newbies to ski there. they have no lift.

Crotched Mountain in Bennington NH is a fun mountain with two lifts taking you to the east and west shoulders of the peak and one peak chair. A fourth chair serves the lower elevation trails and park area. The snow making and trail grooming is very good with natural conditions for advance skiing trails and they have plenty of glade skiing as well as trails with park things.

Generally CM is a local’s mountain with racing and school lesson programs… I’m there 20-25 days annually and with plenty local lodging (meaning not mountain owned or operated) I meet people from all over who are visiting northern New England and want to ski mountains with character and not crowds.

good vibes so far on a few

I really am stoked to hit Magic, B east, crotched and Catamount this year. I love the older, less commercial mountains. I went to Stratton last year and the base felt like a outdoor shopping outlet. It is very nice but it caters to a certain type of client. I don't require bars, shops, restaurants etc. I pack my own lunch and eat on the lift. Not that i'm cheap, I like to save time and not waste a run waiting in a cafeteria line. Bring on the old school charm!
