Currently, 7 of my students are in some sort of cast or sling from terrain parks. The most current was at platteskill and broke his growth plate on his right arm and is in a cast for 6 weeks. Are injuries at terrain parks that common or are my students idiots?

I think it depends on the park and the people using them. I was recently talking to a patroller at my local mountain about injuries on the terrain features. He said this year there have been a lot less than last year. We figured that it was because this year most of them are only accessible from Black Diamond terrain. Where as last year it was all located on a trail that all beginner and intermediate traffic had to go on. This apparently keeps the less experienced from trying things they really probably shouldn't be...

Putting the park enterance off a diamond is the best idea I have ever heard, batter then charging extra $ like Mountaincreek.

The only real solution is to tell kids that they are not invincable...good luck,
I know that I didnt listen, now I can tell the weather when I wake up in the morning. :dunce:

I'm assuming you're talking about Sundown (Gunbarrel and Canyon Run). I haven't been there this year but it's a great idea to have put it on Gunbarrel. I remember going there last year and when you have intermediates/begginers skiing by terrain features a lot more of them are probably going to go in and try it.

Some mountain's, I think Mt.Snow is one, actually label the trail according to its level of difficulty; big features would be a black diamond, medium sized features would be a blue square, etc regardless of the actually pitch of the trail.

The problem here is Sundown has limited expert terrain. Gunbarrel used to be a great mogul run, but with all the junk on it now, it's almost not worth skiing. IMHO.

Yes, I am talking about Sundown. I completely agree with Greg too, at least when they had it on the Canyon run out last year it was out of the way... I suppose the current placement is a good idea from a area managment (less injuries) and seasoned park goer (less crowded) point of view, but it stinks in my point of view ;)

BTW, welcome to the forums Treeliner! :D

Thanks, bvibert

-yeah I hadn't looked at it from that perspective. I remember that being one of if not the only run with a decent pitch there, so I agree a terrible idea in that sense.

You've got to know your limits in terrain parks.
Start small and work your way up. Kids tend to think they are invincible and get in above their heads.

The park pass system is great for large terrain elements like this...

A friend out at Breck just sent this one to me today.

Yeah. Falling is easy, but that sudden jerky motion at the end really sucks.
