Something I have been wanting to do for a while. As you know, we are big Saddleback skiers and we often get asked how to navigate the mountain and which trails we recommend. Here is a guide I wrote on my blog for all 66 trails. I hope folks find it useful for anyone making a journey to Saddleback this winter!

Thanks, salsgang. Well done! If ever you decide to update, I'd be interested in a more detailed description of the snowfields. They're not out of bounds, are they?

Thanks! I pretty much stayed on-map with this blog entry. My kids have a few secret stashes that will remain a secret. I am not sure exactly what the mountain policy is on the snowfields. I know they are not patrolled and not sure if skiing off the backside is encouraged although that is exactly the picture that was shown in a Ski magazine write up a few months ago. I think Tipsdown has spent a lot of time up there... I will have to have him write a guest column. :)

As far as I can tell from the times I was up there in snow season, the bulk of the alpine zone would fall within a Appalachian Trail right of way (though I don't believe the land is technically a Federally owned Appalachian Trail corridor), so presumably if you can get access to above treeline, I don't think you'd be denied use of it.

Patrol will stop you if you try to hike up after 3:00 p.m. (which I guess is the reasonable thing to do). Patrol gave us advise though on where to hike the next day. The whole ridge to skiers right is in play and quite skiable down to the trails when there is enough snow if you know where to go. I have not ventured down the backside, though it does look quite intriguing.
