re: magic development. prudent area owners frequently try to balance growth overall, looking out 10 years. lift capacity/efficiency first, with matching snowmaking coverage, trail capacity, bar stools and lodge beds, parking lots { and more }, following. throw in the variances of weather, elec and fuel costs, staffing, climate change, etc, etc. makes the business one of the most challenging.

like mike tyson says " everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth".

best of luck to magic, for sure.

Beyond snowmaking and trail repair, they need a real beginners chairlift in the learning area. Any idea how much that would cost? Used double or triple, maybe six towers, should be easy, right? I say that very tongue in cheek. Big weekend for them and so happy they finally got the quad up and running. Parking lot was 3/4 full and between the three chairs, there were a ton of chairs going up empty. Kind of nuts that at full capacity they will basically have no lines.

Boy, that's awesome. Looking forward to checking it out.

Unfortunately it's not going to get much run time this year as the season seems destine to end early.

Let's see finish a handle tow that they already own for a few grand or install someone else's cast off for a mill? Door number 1.

Obviously! But ideally, a lift would be much better. How much would a short lift cost to install? I have no idea.

They can pick a tired one up from another ski area for the cost of removal (scrap) and transportation, but then then like I said they have someone else's problem part deux and they have to pay the cost of installation (several hundred thousand). A decent used lift probably a mill all said and done. New obviously more... I don't see it being a priority considering the low percentage of novices that go there and the fact they just took it across the chin.

If I were them planning long-term projects, I'd set pumping capacity as priority #1, and anything lift-related below it. This doesn't include getting that rope tow in - it's not as comfortable as a chairlift but for a beginner skier it would be a great thing to have regardless, plus it would be great for Magic to fully reclaim that terrain and get some snow blowing over there. Can't be too monumental of a project. In the meantime if they want to invest in lifts without falling into the Chairlift Pit of Torture again, maybe give Red a fresh coat of paint or put a J-bar or something in the terrain park, seeing as they're proving how marketable it is. I'll calm down now lol, they just got a huuuuuuge project done that we can all appreciate.

some may not know that once a lift is relocated, it must adhere to the latest B77 standard. very, very expensive as you might guess. there have been, of course, improvements in grip design, tower fall protection, motor control and various safety circuit logic paths during the iterations of the standard. every system has had improvements. a lift designed in the seventies is pricey to upgrade to current safety standards. how pricey? very, unless you have an inexperienced inspector. : )

much cheaper to just slow the red lift down a touch to make loading for beginners easier, and replace the black diamond unload ramp up there with one more beginner friendly. simply pay attention to chair seat heights, and use your best ops top and bottom. beginners will love it and progress to intermediates w/out much angst.
imho.

I honestly can't believe anyone thinks Magic should be thinking about another used lift install after they just set a record for ineptitude for used lift installs.

Smart money is Magic isn't doing a whole lot of work this offseason. 1) because they never do until fall then rush through it to open and 2) they are probably broke after the lift fiasco and their poor performance this year

Will they ever release a why the lift kept wouldn't spin properly?? Did they replace any parts or add and shims to make it run smoothly?? The installer would love never to have the same issue make it that far into re-installation of a lift.

That will never be released in a public fashion.
They actually realased a lot of information over time via the Alpine updates, way more than most areas would. I mean they even posted pics of Do Work welding the tower 13 arm extension on social media.

I didn't follow it enough but did they "Extend the arms more" then the original ones to alleviate the misalignment or they just added the Normal tower arm extension?

Unrelated to everything else you said, but if you ask me, it's way harder getting on Black than Red - Longer than average distance from wait line to load line with no downhill slope, slingshot start (both have that), and the lift runs faster. Even Evel Knievel misloaded on opening day! Green does load nice and slow for people learning to ride a chairlift, and so long as LMC is open it isn't a half-bad spot to get your legs. Traversing down crowded Wand with much better skiers flying by you is where it could get messy.
Will be interesting to see if Red loses the popularity contest to Black going forward. The longer ride time and the shade certainly don't help. They probably get some cool data from the ticket scanners that show when people come/go, what lifts they frequent, when they break for lunch etc.
