Big fun today. Tracks on Upper Moonshine filled up by next lap, though part of that was b/c VH was running really slow. When did they do away with the carpet load? Seems slower than Summit now... Lower Twist surprisingly good, too.
Skier's left of Upper Birdland was nice, and Jestercross was fantastic.
Something was up today. Not sure if the lack of carpet load was causing the slow lift speed or vice versa but the carpet worked fine when I rode VH a few weeks ago, and the line speed was faster than crawl.
Interesting that they went back to Lower Snowball and Racers for more snow-making instead of hitting something new and coming back to them later if they wanted a bit more depth.
Had the same thought. And I recall having the same thought in recent years as they added depths on Spring Fling while Steins, Ripcord and others sit waiting. I am sure someone smarter than me has a rational explanation and hey, at least while the natural snow is falling and sticking there’s less of a compelling immediate need for hitting those trails. But that would argue for a near term push on Birch Run / Sunrise since I don’t recall North Lynx spinning on natural snow alone, at least in recent times.

Btw App Gap was a 12 out of 10 disaster early this afternoon, do not recommend. I drive it very frequently and not sure I’ve experienced worse conditions on it or more people basically camped out in fear, unable to descend either side. And these were VT ski cars, not out of state minivans. The conditions were such that any descending speed at all was near impossible to hold traction with, even in 1st gear with low rpms and snow tires in my case. Glad to have made it with just one side swipe of a snowbank.

I was really glad to be at the Bush as opposed to the Front Range where it R@#$ today. Castlerock was sick today.

Also are both the Sunshine Quad and Village down? That seems like a major issue.

Also I am really not liking this Alterra policy of marking every lift as closed in the snow report from 4PM-8AM/9AM

I agree, making snow on Snowball seems like a waist.

Baffled by no Stein's. Perfect wind for good carry over the trail. And Ripcord I imagine was out due to high winds.

Upper Twist was also the bomb. Can't get over the conditions on natural snow trails that have been relatively sheltered.

The stuff of nightmares..there's been more than one occasion of a Warren-side downhill slide to make it home safely and change my shorts.

Edit: I was thinking Roxbury gap..guess it's just been burned in my brain.

Something’s up. Especially ripchord and North linx. Steins is always one of the last trails along with birdland.

Not always...there were a couple years I have photos of skiing Stein's under the guns in mid-December. I remember all of us thinking it was an interesting decision at the time. I don't one bit fault them for moving it back to the end of the list though. I could certainly see the argument for Hotshot/Waterfall, Birch/Sunrise, and/or Ripcord all being higher on the priority list particularly before the holidays. Gatehouse needs multiple snow-making runs covered to cater to the intermediate crowds. North Lynx being ready would help spread crowds a bit during the holidays.

Also are both the Sunshine Quad and Village down? That seems like a major issue.

Sunny Q often doesn't run until the park features are ready to go over at ME, so that's not a surprise. Village not running yet does seem odd. (I wouldn't call it a "major" issue though).

Snowed all day. Castlerock all time great conditions.
vh carpet loader must be broken. I think the lift has to run slower without the loader in operation.
gatehouse went out on windhold. That’s something.

Interesting...VH carpet was fine a few days ago when I last rode it (whatever day Super Bravo went on wind hold earlier this week...either Saturday or Sunday?)

We are heading into gaper week, and they will need a beginner hill lift for a lot of sporadic visitors. The thing about that crowd is they can't handle any other lift, except maybe Gatehouse which will be especially slammed and is a bit steep for beginners.

Slow AF without the loader, but only one trip up and then over to Heaven's Gate. Great snow up top today until the winds blew in. Bottom of Organgrinder was like a wind tunnel.

Rumors:
Bravo mechanical forced late VH opening and carpets freeze requiring more time, so...

Waiting for part for village. Which if true is bad for this week.

FWIW, as of the 12/19 State of the Mountain blog post, this was their expectation regarding Village:
And elsewhere in lift news, we expect to have Village up and running sometime next week.
Makes sense waiting for a part, but also sounds like they were expecting it pretty soon as of last week. (Although "sometime next week" in the context of 12/19 means they are running out of time to hit that goal).

Yes, it is nuts to show a lift as closed until it actually opens at 8/9AM. It would be nice to know when you wake up to plan the day. My guess is it is because they don't want to tell us that a lift is about to go down due to maintenance issues. We all know about that.

Truthfully there are plenty of variables that can happen between last chair 1 day and 1st chair the next day... Obviously weather is the #1 variable, but sometimes snowmaking ops or mechanical issues can effect next day ops. Fortunately the East Coast, to my knowledge/recollection hasn't been hit with the labor issues effecting next day lift ops as some Western Resorts have been the last few years!

The years that Steins was early were because Winn loved Steins. He said this multiple times. But....then need to blow Ripchord and Birch.

Are you hearing us Sugarbush!!!!!

probably not.

While Ripcord is a signature trail, it doesn’t add to capacity like North Lynx. Base on the weather and their snowmaking capabilities, it would appear North Lynx will not be on offer this holiday season (unless the guns are already on).
