That explains the tarp. Although the people I overheard discussing the lift having issues with no ETA were associated with GMVS. Time will tell when we see whether the lift runs at some point or not I guess.
What is her connection to Sugarbush? GMVS? None that I know of. In fact, she’s alum of a rival. Does Alterra sponsor her?

According to the post, she's an "Ikon Pass athlete"...so I guess Alterra sponsors her. No other connection that I know of.

I don't have an issue with it. It's on the lift that serves the racing pod that has put out some pretty good skiers. Maybe she shows up when the season is over since she is sponsored by Ikon.

There's an update on Slide Brook mentioned in the snow report this afternoon:

Just a quick update on Slide Brook, Mountain Ops is aiming to have the lift open for season on the weekend of February 4th. The water bars are still very deep and wet at this time and the crew is waiting diligently for new lift parts

New lift parts? Did they borrow parts from Slide Brook again for Super Bravo or something?

Did Slide Brook under the towers today - Elevator. Def not ready yet and the track/road out had water bars and some lightly covered big rocks. The snow had been wind-slabbed and there's still lots of uncovered brush. Pinball Alley was difficult too with obstacles. We were the only tracks in at 11:30 and for good reason.

Higher up the mountain the cover was better but needs another storm or two. Really two feet short of traditional safe woods cover.

With the caveat of my feelings towards Alterra, Point No. 1: they rush to get marketing material on Inverness but yet don't have arguably an important lift ready to go when needed because of "new lift parts". I suspect, as ducky said, that part of the issue is not enough snow on the lift line for rescue as required. But still, get your ducks in a row before the season starts. I get that there is a lot to do in preseason, and I know that there may be staffing issues, but it's kind of late to be waiting for lift parts. I know that SBX can be controversial with some, but it is a big part of Sugarbush.

Point No. 2: know your audience. I don't know about the racing community except from what I observe as the general public so I do not know the extent of rivalries or competition. Folks who are in the know correct me if I am wrong. As I mentioned, Mikaela has no connection to Sugarbush or GMVS. None. She went to their rival, BMA. So, unveiling a huge banner congratulating her on GMVS' home turf might be odd at the very least. Yes, it is racing. Yes, she probably had races there. Yes, the racing community, in Vermont in particular, is over-the-moon for her. But she's not from Sugarbush or GMVS. It would be like the NFL unveiling a huge banner of Jalen Hurts outside of MetLife/Giants Stadium right now congratulating him on making it to the NFC Championship. I hope that management/marketing at least ran it by GMVS. Most likely not. Again, may not be a big deal, but I think it is odd and shows that someone does not really understand the community and was making decisions from a 50,000 foot level, which Alterra brags that they don't (they do, but not to the extent of Vail). That kind of congratulatory message is better off at Burke Mountain.

Perhaps add this to the nit-pick list that includes the snow reporting issues.

Yeah, as I figured, the lack of snow is the bigger issue with SBX.

Yes. They have sponsored her for a couple of years. She appeared on one of the Late Night Comedy shoe pre-COVID with her Ikon Pass.

I'm not sure lack of snow is a "bigger" issue. You can have all the snow you want and it wouldn't matter if you're still waiting on parts. Waiting on snow is outside of SB's control. Waiting on parts you'd think they have "some" degree of control over unless it was an issue that happened very late (hence why I suggested maybe they borrowed a part for Super Bravo which would make sense and explain why the part was only ordered later and they're now waiting for it). They made a pretty big deal in the summer and fall blog posts that Slide Brook would be ready for the winter.

Was talking about Slide Brook with someone while I was riding on the lifts at ME this weekend. He had the same opinion I do. We both agreed we didn't care whether it ran or not. "Nice" to have, but both myself and the guy on the lift I was riding with had the same mentality...we tend to pick one side of the mountain and stay there instead of wasting time riding the lift (or bus) going back and forth.

I would bet to differ on this point. Alterra was smart to sponsor Mikaela a few years ago. She might have gone to Burke, but I think everyone here celebrates her success and having her name as one enters the Kelly Brush Racing is a nice connection for both Sugarbush and GMVS.

Alterra has nothing to do with lift maintenance at Sugarbush. This is the responsibility of local management. I haven’t asked what the issue is, but I know from past experience that getting parts from Poma on a timely basis has been a huge problem even predating COVID. Our summer order placed in the early winter often did not arrived until late fall. But that’s not my problem any more :)

PS: Castlerock was sweet this morning.

I could be off base, but it seems like the ski racing community is small enough in the US that once you get to representing the country internationally you've gone past the point of inter school rivalries being important.

I would have thought the same thing...I've never met anyone from GMVS that said "I don't like Mikaela because she's from BMA." Everyone seems to view it more as "She's an amazing US skier. I want to be like her!"

I’m willing to bet that banner is at other Alterra areas….

Dude your hate boner for them is impressive. I think its surpassed DHS's hate boner for Vail.

I know this isn't likely news for you but here it goes. Pro Athletes get sponsored, they get stuff and money. Those people who sponsor them then use the sponsored athlete in promotions.

If burke mountain put this on one of their lifts no one would've ever seen it outside of the 50 or so people on this forum and regular burke skiers.

Couple of things here on "banner-gate"....

First- many organizations can walk and chew gum at the same time, in fact they have to. It's highly unlikely that marketing material stuck on a lift structure had anything to do with mechanical parts being delayed on another lift. I would doubt the same suppliers are involved here, prob not even the same teams at the mountain either (not that it would matter).

Second- World Cup racing is on the (wait for it..) World Stage. She is an American who has done quite well among her worldwide peers in a sport that does not always see the US at the top. Of course her achievement is significant no matter where she is from and this is not going unnoticed overseas either. To those that follow the sport and especially to kids that are racing this is huge. I am sure they are celebrating this at GMVS, Cochran's, BMA and everywhere else racing is done. Racing is a big part of the history and development of skiing and ski culture in Vermont, I see no harm in recognizing that.

and oh yeah, it's going to snow some more- Yay!

1) She's a good skier from New Hampshire. Everyone try's to take credit for our work ethic: The Battle of Bunker Hill (Mass.), Bode Miller (Maine). When will it end?

2) Lifts should lift stuff: beer to hotels, skiers and snow patrol dogs.

# this is the biggest ski scandal since the Olympics.
