Just saw that the 2:45 report says HG & NL lifts closed for the day, 1st time I checked the report, perhaps they were down all day. I'm not skiing today, so I don't know about the wind situation, all the say is closed "boy oh boy"...

Jan. 27th, 2025 3:15 PM: Despite the wind, today was still a huge win(d)! Ha. Heaven's Gate and North Lynx went on windhold and closed for the day within the last hour, but kept on throughout the greater part of today, providing some awesome, dust-on-crust type turns!

I skied from 9 to 12 and it was very windy. As someone said, ski racks were being blown over.
While ripcord got a groom, it was pretty much boiler plate. Hard to find anything not wind-scoured, except for a few at gatehouse. Often, gatehouse has the best conditions. They were blowing snow on spring fling and snowball. I don't like guns.

In almost 40 years of Skiing Ellen, I can say that they kept Nridge running in very windy conditions. It was a cross wind and the gusts where the lifts crossed the bottom of elbow was a whiteout. in my experience I never criticize the mountain for their wind decisions, usually a smart balance between keeping us happy and safe. This does not in anyway absolve any of my prior posts about pre-season maintenance, scheduling and execution of a well run operation. B the way- skiing was very good today and empty.

I skied until 2:00 yesterday and was shocked the lifts ran as long as they did. They wind was gnarly and gusts got worse in the afternoon.

I am in Utah this week until Friday with bluebird skies and no snow, so you all are going to get the snow and have a fun week I saw the snow report said 3-5#. Will be skiing chalky snow before it turns to styrofoam later. I understand that Slidebrook had all the summer maintenance completed and just need to hang a few chairs, run and check it and get it inspected.d. I think the issue with all the other lifts running and not having. a full team of mechanics is getting the time to do this. The cold recent cold weather would have prevented it from running but jhopefully it will be ready soon as the weather becomes a bit warmer.

entrance to Mellen Slide is at elbow of Rim Run after it passes Scotch Mist/Looking Good. Do not go alone or with someone who’s never done it before. Very few who know how to get around the few ravines it can dump you in.

From what I heard from a friend who got lost in there, there’s no “getting around” the Lockwood Brook ravine. It’s bushwhacking on skis. Their group made it out unscathed, but it certainly didn’t sound like a good time. Apparently they descended the wrong ridge, and by the time they figured it out, their only options were to go down chutes or cliffs.

This was a group of excellent skiers, they had people who’d been in there numerous times. AFAIK, there was no glaring mistake that was made. While you want your party to have some experience in there, it’s not a panacea, and experience can breed complacency too. A less experienced leader might have stopped and verified their route on CalTopo or what have you, and realized they were off course.

Most people enter Slidebrook from Lynx for a reason. It’s still backcountry skiing, so never go alone, be prepared, remember that help is several hours away if you get hurt in there. But the routes are much easier to follow over there.
