I'm going to go with 7 months...but read on.at what point did the thought of having a cigarette become unappealing?
I used Zyban to help me quit. Zyban totally reduced my physical dependencies, so all I had to deal with was the psychological ones. You take 1 pill once a day for a week, then you take 2, for the next 3-6 months. They tell you to plan your quit sometime in the 1st 21 days after you start taking it.
I quit after 10. The Zyaban was doing it's job, and when I did smoke (espically the cig with the morning coffee) I didn't feel the "hit" in the chest anymore. At that point, I was like "why bother"
7 years ago, I wasn't skiing, mostly because I couldn't afford it. I made myself a promise that if I stayed quit until December, I'd go out and buy myself a new pair of ski boots (I had some rad 210 K2 TRC Comps lying around). One day in December, while driving on the Garden State Parkway I heard a commercial on the radio for Princeton Ski Shops annual ski show and sale at Giant Stadium. I got off at the next exit, turned the car around and bought a pair of boots.
The first time I went out skiing, I found lost love from my childhood. After my first run, I made a pact with myself to trade tobacco for skis. For life.
So for me, it was 7 months. Sorry for the long winded story. I hope that helps.
Set rewards for your self so the longer you go without smoking, the bigger the reward.

Write down in advance what your rewards will be and post them someplace where you will see it every day.
