Theft of service is a huge issue. Go online to thestowereporter.com and read the police report, theft of services is the #1 crime in Stowe. The lifties are even compensated for picking people off, $25-$50 I think.

Just this year they seem to be checking full time at Stowe. The last few years we use to laugh at ourselves for actually buying a ticket. One day my buddy just put his ticket in his pocket just to see if anyone would ask. All day no one did. If the resort does not bother to check and they get that reputation, then who's fault is it?

Coincidence - you decide. In a recent issue of the Stowe newspaper there were four arrests for "theft of service" and four reports of a snowboard being stolen. NO reports of skis being stolen.

I (probablly like most) people are only bothered by the scanners when the line gets held up and empty chairs go up... as long as the scanners dont act as if they are on a power trip and use a little common sense when it comes to "line flow management" then I have no problem with it.

It's not just theft, some resorts use it to calculate their skier days. That's why a resort will scan season passes to try and get an accurate count of skier visits. Some other resorts just use a formula, say 30 days per season pass holder. As said before the scanning also allows for 3 out of 4 day passes 4 of 5, etc.. ticket products to be possible. Or a discount pass that charges you when you're scanned.

Funny thing is, I've never experienced empty chairs when scanners are being used. They're usually efficient and friendly.

I think a lot of knuckleheads figured out how to take a lift ticket from last week, scan it into their computer, make a few changes with photoshop, and print out a new one.

If guys are forging automobile inspection certificates and licenses, you can be sure they can forge lift tickets.

What bugs me is the guy not recognizing me after the second time he scans me; I'm on twin tips, no poles, and I carry a backpack. Most days I'm the ONLY guy on the hill without poles. And I have a season pass....

Recognize you or not, their job is to scan every time you ride the lift. As was previously stated, there's more data to be gained than just whether or not your pass is valid.

I dunno. Without the electronic scanners, sure. But it's no biggie to have a system where ticket validation includes checking the barcode against a list of valid tickets. Barcode number not in the range? It's a theft. Barcode scanned too soon after the last time that number was scanned? At the very least raise a red flag.

I'd be surprised if the systems don't automatically do this as it's pretty trivial to implement.

I think that was his point, without the bar-code/scanning system it's pretty easy to forge a ticket. What you described is pretty much how it works.

Since there's still a possibility of some clown trying to use a forged day ticket, I think they should concentrate on scanning those tickets, instead of letting them slide by and scanning my season pass over and over.
I prefer to ski directly onto the chair without stopping. If the guy with the scanner cold run alongside and scan my pass without me stopping, that would be OK. But stopping then starting again interferes with my rhythm; especially since I don't use poles most days.

Then use poles.......:-?

The only time it bothers me is when they keep trying to scan your ticket, and it keep rejecting it. Its annoying to keep standing there. Then instead of saying maybe it is rejected cause it is fake, or something of this nature, they let you go anyway.

Ticket scanning and validation at the lift are always a hot button. Once you have a ticket or are wearing a season pass, scanning is a last ditch effort to catch the most egregious scammers at the lift.

Egregious examples from this year are ( to mention a FEW)

Lifetime Pass Holders rented their personal home for a week and included THEIR passes to sweeten the deal. The clients/guests were told " oh just use our passes, we won't be there. You won't have to pay. "

neighbor/relative to the above LTP did the same thing the same weekend, loaned/rented to friends and advised them to just use the passes that were at the house. " You won't have to pay for tickets"

How embarrassing for everyone involved was THAT?????? Can't make boys and girls look the same regardless of age or name. 8 season passes suspended, 8 guests required to pay full price.

LTP holder tries to use a Companion Pass coupon on a Saturday. OOPS! (1) The coupon expired in May of 2006 and (2) the coupon is only good for Monday Thru Friday. Somehow that one was ALL my fault for reading comprehension. Blue words ensued, companion/guest was totally embarrassed, had to pay, and LTP holder was foaming at the mouth.

KIDS scamming at age 10+...... " oh, gee, ummmm. I lost my season pass or left it on another coat, my name is Jane/John Doe, can I have a pass for today? OK, we'll disable your SEASON pass and issue you a day ticket. 10 minutes later the same kid is in line with his SEASON Pass. Sorry, I cannot restore your SEASON pass until I get back the ticket I gave you earlier, just let me clip it off your coat....... Oh, I don't have that ticket, I don't know where it went, I must have lost that one too.. I don't have it...... pout."

Sigh. where do they learn it from?

This time of year, there is often the Parking Lot bankroll to contend with. Coupons and vouchers being sold car to car are not often reliable, especially on weekends. I'm often harshly chastised by folks for not honoring something or other that was obtained elsewhere.. either it is expired, restricted to weekdays, or specific to the ORIGINAL holder, ( I D doesn't match) and the buyer just got carried away by potential $$ savings. Is it WORTH it? (At least check out what you score, make sure you aren't going to have to go ballistic in front of a lot of people and embarrass yourself and others.)

Theft of services ...stop/loss .. encompasses SO MUCH MORE than the dreaded ticket scanning . Too many people think IT IS <NOTHING> in the Grand Scheme of things, but take my back for a weekend, be responsible to my employer as I am.
