Well, I am in a really tight situation here and I am not sure if this has happened to anyone else here or not. I honestly have no clue what to do! Me being a poor college grad... I can typically do one big purchase a year. So the question comes down to a new bike or a new pair of skis?

Now I have a pair of P40's myself and I use my roomys Mogul skis more then he does. As far as bikes, I am rocking a classic steel road bike with down shifters, a-frame and all. I could easily bring this bike to antiques road show. However the bike works great and I still kick ass on the group rides.

Quality pair of ski= couple hundred bucks
Quality bike = over a $1000 bucks

I swear each day I wake up and have a different answer as to which item to buy. Im thinking about rolling dice…evens bike odds skis. Any ideas which way I should go? For now I need food before the sabers game and then the Tour of California on Versus (god I love that chan sometimes).

Choices….

not sure how old and poor quality your bike is in, but you can consider this: i am a former p40 platinum skier and still occasionally rock out the p50 motions on a rare groomer only day early season. the difference between the p40 model of skis and current models is night and day, so much has happened in just over a half dozen years. time to pony up for a good pair of all mountain mid-fats! get thee to a demo day and you will definitely see the light :D

If it was me, I'd have the same problem in deciding.....but ski season is about half over, I might lean more towards a bike. But then again, now might be the time to snag a good deal on skis....it's about the time for them to start dropping prices.....

I'm so whishy, washy....it's a hard decision to make....did I help? ;) What 'da ya want I'm a girrll :) Oh go for the skis, you can do the same for the bike, they'll be having deals on them before you know it too......

Two words:

Craig's List.

Or wait and hit the swap meets next fall/early season. You can find a lot of good/lightly used gear there for not a lot of money. Just because it's used doesn't mean it's not good.

Ski prices are getting slashed dramatically as we speak.

Bike prices will be high right now - preseason...

Check with your local bike shop to see if they know about any bike swap events. Does your school have a cycling club, racers always seem to be getting new bikes? They must be selling the old ones. Don't know if you get down to MA at all, but Belmont Wheelworks has the Annex where they discount previous seasons inventory. You can find good deals there sometimes.

All this provided you don't want the skis of course.

you've probably got more time than money. Economize:

ebay at the end of the ski season. Lots of shops unloading demos. By summer, you can get a pair of skis really cheap, nobody's shopping for skis, but they're still posted. Heard of one fellow who got some top end skis/binding mid summer for low 100s.

In the spring, scour the hoity-toity neighborhoods for garage sales and get there early. You would be suprised how much really fine equipment (including bikes) is bought, unused and dumped.

Yes, I practice what I preach, quite succesfully too!

Mr. Cheap.
