So we:
myself - former ski instructor
wife - straight up blue trails skier
13 yr old daughter - same
5 yr old son - just started last season but already comfy on blues

Just bought the "Threedom Pass" to ski Loon/Waterville/Cranmore. It seemed like a pretty good deal @ $329 for adults and $289 for the teenager. We bought the "limited pass" with 10 blackout dates.

Anyone else buying this pass? We have not skied Loon/Waterville/Cranmore in a long time, (except cranmore once last season) but it seemed like such a good deal and should be good mountains for the family. What do people think of these Mtns? I seem to remember Loon and probably Waterville having enough blues and enough blacks to keep us all entertained. Anyone want to give any advice as to the good tree/off-piste stuff at these Mtns?

Thanks! Is is snowing yet????

Charlie and Bob R are Threedom holders. I'm sure they'll reply.

Waterville Valley is a favorite for "Blue Skiers" heading up Rte 93 on Sundays and day-off weekdays...Loon is pretty much the same...however the Diamond Skier & the teenager will get a little bored with WVVV after a few Sunday's there and you'll find Loon's North Peak & East Basin area's more to your liking...to utilize Cranmore, stay over the weekend or plan to spend a considerable amount of time in the automobile...

I've been a Threedom Pass holder since it's inception and enjoy it very much...I spend the bulk of my time at Loon and make WVV trips with skiers who would like to go there...

Traveling (time & distance) is about the same between Loon or WVV...have fun!

I'm a huge fan of Loon. If you are a regular you will learn how to pretty much work around the crowds. I'll give ya a tour if you want. Sounds like Charlie and I be grabbing some some preparing for the AZ ski team. If you come up for the weekend I would suggest you hang out at Waterville at night and ski Loon during the day. The only times I ski Waterville is early in the season. I'll go to Loon one day and Waterville the next to get some terrain variety. The kids/teenages will prefer Loon I would bet. Alot of young folks hang out in the Town square at Waterville at night. Very safe and easy to get around. Always something going on.

Cranmore is the little talked about Gem. Usually less crowded. Nice deal.
They have a park that get lit up Sat night. Kind of old school skiing. the town of North Conway is fun. I go there a few times a year.

This pass is a great deal. I have had 4 of them for the last 4 years. I do have the unlimited, but the 10 days blacked out are insane anyways.

Charlie, does your family not ski at Loon or WV on Saturdays?

Saturday's are "Honey-Do Day" at house....Sunday is Ski Day!

If I'm skiing on a Saturday, it is somewhere other than Loon or WVV....more like Killington or Sunday River, Sugarloaf...weekend destination places...

I just re read the original post. Ski magazine posted some back country stuff on loon in its secrets section. I prefer not to post it.
I'll help out via pm. There is some decent woods skiing at Loon its mostly marked on the trail map. Some nice intermediate suff. Some pretty challenging stuff at least by my standards.( Not like Flying Monkey at the River) RiverCoil played around in the woods he had a decent reviews of it. Hope this helps. Doesn't matter your in.

Thanks everyone for the comments so far. I hope to get out to Loon enough (when the wife and kids are inside warming up!) to find some of the good stuff! I think we made the right choice (we actually bought these passes along with another family who have a 5 yr old learning this season). I have skied Loon and Waterville when I was younger ('1980s). Now all we need is LOTS of snow this year!

Good news is Loon really does a great job blowing snow. I would not say at the level of Killington or Sr, but an excellent job. At the end of the season when the turf begins to show, that will not be the case at Loon. Early season they seem to open terrain a little slow. They cover it deep before they move on. After a early warm spell we are still skiing.
I have met a few snowmakers there and they take great pride in what they do.
