Trip Report: Thought it might be interesting for you folks to get a report from a little different area of the country. The people on DCSki.com sometimes refer to the Mid-Atlantic region as MASH(Mid-Atlantic ski hell). But for one weekend at least it was MId-Atlantic ski heaven for my wife and me. We had rescheduled this trip twice due to the warm weather, and we hit it right.
Friday 2/10 was a beatiful calm sunny day at Timberline. We got on the chair about 9:30 and the lifty told us it was 14 degrees at the summit. It sure didn't feel like it. The sun made for some warm rides up, but the cold temperatures kept the snow in great shape. The summit of Timberline is 4268 feet and it has a 1000 foot drop. It's pretty much a cruising mountain and that's what we did. Our favorite run is a blue called Almost Heaven, we hit that first. We worked our way across the mountain enjoying the smooth snow. I checked out a couple of what passes for double blacks in West Virginia, one was groomed but the other, Off the Wall had some unique features. They blow mounds of snow on one side of the run and leave them there creating steep whalebacks. It makes for some interesting skiing. They have a new trail this year which they were working on but didn't open on Friday.
Here are some pics: http://forums.alpinezone.com/module...ame=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php Saturday the snow was falling as we pulled into Canaan Valley. It's has the same summit elevation,or close to it, but only an 850 foot vertical. You really only get 750 because the beginners area is the bottom 100 feet. It's a lot more open than Timberline and less steep. But it still is an interesting mountain. Each run the conditions got better as the snow started piling up. Late in the morning I went over to Weiss Meadows 3. It had a thin cover sign on it but the left side had collected a lot of snow. It was ungroomed with a lot of untouched lines that offered some boot deep powder. By far my favorite run of the weekend. Late in the day I ventured through the woods to the left Weiss Meadows 3. There was a blue that was not officially open that had only 2 sets of tracks on it. One on each side of the run leaving the middle for me. Over the years there haven't been any chances for me to get that much untouched powder. I have to say that was one of the most enjoyable runs I've had. Boot deep virgin powder!
