Every time Killington pisses me off and I do the evaluation to change mountains, I always end up with "Sugar-something".

1. Sugarbush with a MRG midweek pass
1a. Sugarloaf
3. Stowe
4. Jay Peak
4a. KMart

Sugarloaf is the best spot to own a vacation home from an economic point of view. Real estate prices are lower. There's tons of ski-in/ski-out. Low property taxes since Maine doesn't have Vermont's Act 68 school tax that pushes the tax rate up over 2%. Big vertical. Interesting terrain. A pleasant, laid-back vibe. The down sides are the drive time, the wind holds & wind scouring, and the remoteness from things like grocery stores and medical treatment.

The combination of Sugarbush & MRG are probably the best pure skiing option. Lots of ungroomed and tree skiing. Win Smith has created a great vibe at Sugarbush and MRG midweek is a delight. The town's not bad and you have Burlington less than an hour away. With a vehicle that can handle the Roxbury Gap road, you're very close to I-89 with easy access to metro-Boston. You have KMart an hour to the south for early & late skiing if the new owners ever come to their senses. You have $teaux less than an hour to the north to break it up. The down side is the Vermont state school tax that makes real estate ownership expensive. Sugarbush also doesn't have much snowmaking so when it's a bad year, the skiing is going to be pretty limited.

I'd relocate to Stowe in a minute but I can't afford their housing and the town is a little too trustafarian for me. I had my college passes there back in the day and really like the mountain. It has the same close proximity to Burlington and easy access to I-89. The mountain is small but it skis large when you venture off the cut trails. You also have the unsanction option of going up & over to Smuggs though I haven't done that in a very long time.

Jay clearly has the best snow but it skis very short and it's in the middle of freakin' nowhere.

Killington is my home. Midweek, it's great. Weekends used to be terrible in the ASC cheap season pass era but have improved dramatically but there are still an awful lot of stressed out weekenders that wreck the vibe of the place. The place was neglected for a decade and the base lodge infrastructure needs a wrecking ball. The skiing is good with tree skiing and natural snow trail options in the 250" snow belt. You get your vertical 1000' at a time but the place sprawls so you're not on the same terrain all the time. I worry that new lifts will trash the best of the natural snow terrain on Snowdon and South Ridge. I go out of my mind when conditions are lousy and I'm stuck on manmade groomers. You get a better skiing surface farther north in Vermont since there's less traffic. You get more sustained vertical farther north in Vermont.

1) Saddleback
2) Sugarbush
3) Stowe
4) Wildcat
5) Cannon

Those 5 could go in any order.

Only skied Black(NH) once, but it would make my top 6.

Skiied Jay many years ago, before I knew how to ski. I suspect it would make the list when/if I get there again.

Never been to Smuggs, Burke, MRG, Magic, Loaf...I'm sure any of them would be strong contenders.

Based on what I have skied (since I got back into skiing about 5 years ago after a 10 year layoff) and with a deference towards my wife and two young kids:

1. Sugarbush
2. Stowe
3. Whiteface
4. Stratton
5. Elk (had to put one PA mountain on there since we ski PA the most)

Probably need to hit the following before I could make an informed choice - MRG, Jay, Killington, Sugarloaf, Cannon, Sunday River and Magic

Wow sounds like Sugarbush and Stowe are the most prevalent on peoples lists.

I've only been to:

1. Sundown
2. Southington
3. Ascutney
4. Wachusett
5. Bromley

Will be going to Mt. Snow on Friday, hope that rain doesn't damage to much!
And doing Butternut next Monday! Yeah for my second season!
