Anybody have a trip planned for out West or Europe?

I don't have a definite yet, but we're working on a trip to the Tahoe area; I've never been. I hear there are more choices South Tahoe, but North Tahoe has it's advantages too. Anybody have an opinion?

Lodging choice - maybe
But not skiing choices...

I personally like staying on the North Shore becuase I prefer the skiing up there.. Alpine, Squaw, Homewood and even Northstar when the other mountains are on "wind hold"..
You can get a cheap rate at a casino on the North Shore, eat cheap food and be where the good stuff is..

South shore is nicer as far as lodging goes.. Heavenly is the big draw there not a huge fan of the place - but Kirkwood which is a little distance to the southshore is amazing..

Some advice..
Hit Mount Rose on your way from or to the airport in Reno... Place is great!!
Also - if your into crazy terrain - hit Sugarbowl. Wow.. Scared the crap outta me.. Can't wait to get back..

I really love Tahoe...

I had my shores mixed up. I don't care about no stinkin lodging. In every ski forum they're raving about Mt. Rose, that will be a must do. I've heard of Sugarbowl, but didn't know about the x-terrain.
Thanks 4 the tips.

Sugarbowl is the only place I've ridden fluted terrain inbounds..

The Palisades and the 58's are some sick stuff... Totally fluted and steep - like looking straight down steep.. crazy...

Also some great stuff off of Disneys Nose...
Walt Disney was one of the owners of Sugarbowl.. There's and old gondola that has a Disney feel to it..

I stayed at South lake last year and you can drive anywhere from there. That being said, I would say that the north lake is better with Squawllywood. That's the only one I got to ski up there. Kirkwood is a great area off the south lake and I would definitely recommend the trip even if you stay on the North lake.

Don't forget about the deep snow that closes the roads from north to south...

dmc, please forgive my ignorance here - "fluted terrain"? What exactly is that?

Not a problem..
Fluted snow is snow that forms into vertical ridges.

Unfortunately we didn't really get any of that deep snow. It was 60 when we got there for some nice spring snow and then it dropped to about 30 for some quality eastern skiing out west.

The only place I've skied that has fluted terrain was in Portillo, Chile. It wasn't as steep as the pic, but at first it scared me away. Once I got up the nerve to jump in, I realized that it was actually alot easier to ski than most of the rock lined chutes that were not fluted.

Question: all of the terrain at Portillo is above treeline. Most pics I've seen of fluted terrain is also above treeline. So, is this a product of alpine terrain or can fluted terrain be found below treeline?

The terrain at Sugarbowl was below treeline but a big wide open face... That must take a lot of wind head on... Or something like that...

I'm going to Poland in November (hopefully as late in November as possible). Hopefully there will be some snow at Zakopane, otherwise we're just going to have to road trip it to Italy. Or Switzerland. Or anywhere else that has snow.

I've skied in Italy and Switzerland, but never would have thought of Poland. Am I missing out?

Zakopane is supposed to be nice- not really any trails, per se, but tons of glades and bowls. Only a few arial lifts- you basically go to the top, ski down, and spend the rest of the day taking surface lifts up, trying to get back to the lodge. My wife said she and a friend spent all day "lost" in the woods because they couldn't figure out how to make it back.

http://www.snow-forecast.com/pistemaps/Zakopane_pistemap.shtml

16 trails, 2700 vert, 2 chairs, 16 surface, 2 gondolas. And 12 bars.
