It was a perfect day for hiking. Sunny, not a cloud in the sky, and temps not too hot. I started later than I was planning at 10;00 but was surprised to see only 4 other cars in the lot when I arrived. Hiking the 3.6 miles to the north end of the Tripyramid Loop was boring but it was a good warm up after not hiking for a few weeks. The loop starts off as a nice path through the woods with not much elevation gain but quickly becomes quite steep when approaching the slide. After climbing some intermittent loose sections the trail got even steeper and turned to rock slab. I ran into some folks who had to stop and about face part of the way up the slide because Fido couldn't make it any farther. I really enjoy this type of climbing and had a blast on the slide. At the top of the slide I wasn't paying attention and continued straight into the woods on a herd path that abruptly ended instead of turning left on the trail. I bushwhacked in the general direction of the trail and shortly found myself back on track just below the summit. After a stop for lunch I continued on over Middle and South Peaks and down the south slide. The South Slide is looser and slightly less steep, at least thats how it seemed to me. Before I knew it I was at the bottom of the slide and the trail flattened out which made for enjoyable traveling. Once back to Livermore Rd I made the jaunt back to the car as I was passed by hoards of mountain bikers. Got back to the car shortly after 4:30 after an awesome day of hiking. I think that the North Slide is my favorite section of trail that I have hiked so far.
