The liftlines in LCC can be a problem on weekends. Solitude, though, is never an issue. Even on weekends, though, if you stay away from the Snowbird tram, you are probably okay.
If you want to do three different resorts in three days, and one day is a Saturday, make that the Solitude day, and the others Alta and Snowbird.

Alta and Snowbird are about 15 miles from the hotel, and Solitude and Brighton are about 22 miles up the respective canyon roads. Figure between 20 - 30 minutes depending upon which two you are headed for. You can't get lost, because both roads dead end at the resorts. Also, signs are posted everywhere. Ask at the hotel for the correct east-west route to hook up with the canyon roads.

Airline tix purchased, room reserved at the Best Western, we're good to go on 3/2. Thank you to tirolerpeter and everyone else for all the helpful hints!

Ah, there's the rub. Everyone else thinks the same way and you end up getting one, maybe two good runs in at the LCC resorts before it's tracked up. The Amp-out factor is so high there, that you are literally competing with thousands of other locals and good powder skiers. On the PC side, you get far less competition. I can do laps up Pinecone Ridge a week after a dump and still get untracked, run after run. I'll take those odds any day.

Hey Tiro,

Maybe you should get some kind of kickback from Best Western for providing all of this new business!

Grea idea. Anybody who goes out there should tell them to "comp" Tirolerpeter.

I totally forgot to mention to those of you heading out to SLC, that Brighton has NIGHT SKIING, just in case you actually have any legs left from the daytime.

Damn! Seems like everybody knows how great Utah is. Can't wait to get back in March. Just skied Hunter on Monday. Wasn't a great day to be sure. I'm getting spoiled by the West conditions.

Not exactly. One maybe two good runs?! Yeah, Alta's such a drag....
I've lived there, too, you know. I've gotten fresh pow days after a storm with a little creative traversing in LCC, and with far less hiking (ie. far less time between runs) than Pine Cone Ridge. Plus, LCC's terrain is significantly better, with more vert.
The locals don't run to LCC b/c they've never heard of Pine Cone Ridge...

Keep in mind guys...I am RETIRED..This means I NEVER ski weekends. If there is a DUMP I go, whether it is here in the east, or out west. Hunter says they will have significant snow tonight. I'm on my way at 0515 tomorrow morning...ta..ta!

You must have missed this:

Hunter Mountain, NY

Thursday 3/24 (2005)

POWDER !!..UNGROOMED!

REPORT

I hit the Mountain at 9AM. Despite dire and hysterical "road condition" reports on all the radio stations I departed at 0530 and made a record run from Smithtown, LI. I must have been listening to some alternate universe radio stations. On the Thruway I hooked up with a slug of cars that actually hit 100 a couple of times. The cops must have been rescuing snow-bound widows somewhere. That run set the tone. The snow was incredible. It was actually DRY powder and in places had drifted to nearly two feet. I made about three or four "warm-up" runs. Not only my leg muscles warmed up, but since it was in the thirties, my whole body warmed up. I had only underwear under my powder suit and I had that unzipped to my belly button (Although, you wouldn't really want to see that.) About 10 AM I hooked up with a guy with a season pass who knew every secret powder stash on the mountain. He also skied like a bat-out-of-hell, and I chased him like a maniac. The faster we went, the more time I spent air-borne. It really smoothes things out when you fly over the bumps! Every so often you could hear the calls of the "Powder Hungry Woohoo Bird" as skiers hit piles and piles of the stuff. It really was amazing how dry the snow was, and not just for March. I have to say that it approached (sort of) the stuff I like to blow through out in UTAH. Too bad they are predicting (UGH!!!) non-crystaline-precipitation for tomorrow! Every few years we get this kind of thing in the East. It really helps keep up my spirits despite the sadness I feel at the arrival of spring.

How was that?

BTW, for those of you who have never traveled by air to a ski destination: Keep your goggles in your carry-on. The baggage gorillas can do a job on them!

a big dump followed by rain does NOT remind me of Alta!

:D :D :D

However fleeting the moments, you have to be grateful for them when they happen. I'll post on the conditions we encounter at Hunter today later tonight.

Well said! Most of the great moments are fleeting, which, in some respects, is what makes them so treasured.
