I was impressed with how many of these photos are of Mt Snow and Stratton. My impression of those areas has always been that they were a destination with New Yorkers and probably still are.

Just out of curiosity - If you are driving from NY, especially near NYC, what route do you normally take?

I found interesting the picture of Snowshed at Killington dated 1984. Doesn't seem that long ago but I noticed it was before they widened out Superstar and put up the lift. I was up there a couple of seasons in the late 80's and Superstar Quad was there as well as the Snowshed quad. Anyone know what year those were put in?

I-87 (New York Thruway). Maybe my favorite highway except for the toll$.(because of where it takes me) Enter Vermont from the west side (either Bennington or Rutland).

FWIW: I am west of NYC and close to the I-80, I-287 interchange which is then a straight shot up to Albany and beyond. As others have shown there may be better routes for those in the City and east of the Hudson

I take the Sprain Pkwy to the Taconic State Pkwy, then Rt. 22, NY. 7 to VT. 9 then I think it's the new road VT. 249? over to VT. Rt 7 north. No tolls & this is the most direct route unless you take Rt. 22 all the way up.

You can also take I-87 (NY Thruway) or I-95 & then up I-91 but I find it takes longer.

The first picture from Mount Snow of the double with lattice towers. Where is that from? Doesn't look familiar to me...

Standard or Ego (pre buddle/triple) maybe?

I like the bromley picture too. I noticed the date Apr 9 which is just about the end of their season under best of circumstances. I also noticed Sally Sutton skiing on October 21 at Killington but what originally drew my attention was clearly the lack of snow on the trail.

I take the Taconic as well. 279 is the new road. Door to door lower Wsestcehster to Magic is about 3:15 without hitting 70 on Taconic and doing 60 on the other roads. the other 2 routes each take me 4 hours.

Ski Dork why 22 all the way? Are you running commercial plates? it seems that while the most direct, it isn't the shortest on time.

Oh almost forgot... thanks for posting that article. Its slightly ahead of my time but I can still appreciate it.

I'm coming from the SE end of Brooklyn on Jamaica Bay. Takes me awhile just to get north of the city even with no traffic. My house to the K parking lot is 4:40 taking the Taconic with no traffic of course (even stop for gas/food). Cruise set at 64mph on Taconic & a couple of mph less on Rt.22. I never seem to do it in under 5hrs. going any other route even doing 75mph. Now if I were heading to the Mad River Valley, Stowe, Smuggs, Burke, Jay or NH. I-91 either straight up or to I-89 is the way to go. I've made the Bush in 5:15 going that route. Anything from K south it's faster on the Taconic (even the Catskills).

Both lifts were installed in 1987.

Super Star & Skylark were two classic New England style trails before they raped Skye Peak.

Thank you all for satisfying my curiosity. .... Now I know what roads to avoid.

I had been taking taconic, and going back on 84 to get to 684 and the t-neck to LI. Someone I know up at K told me to try 22, and once I did I ended up liking it better. It saves the 8 miles west, then 8 miles east of the Taconic and I can do pretty good speed on it in most sections. Plus there are many places to stop vs Taconic. I typically make it from K to Merrick in 5:10.

BTW, I only take this home since it saves $12 in tolls. Going up Fri night I still take the Thruway, since I don't have to pay GWB tolls and I can gas up my eco-disaster Suburban in Jersey
