Date(s) Skied: Friday Night 1/7/10

Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett, MA

Conditions: PP, LSGR, 2-3" new snow, 20s

Trip Report:

Really good night at Wachusett... lines were long for a while but other than that, fresh snow and a REALLY REALLY GOOD BUMP LINE ON HITCHCOCK?!?!?!?!?

Yep, you heard it. The field starts out crappy just after the Vickery split, but right around the top of the steeper pitch, a good 25-30 bump long line that is honestly the best I've ever seen at Wachusett. Not to mention instead of having to ski the entire length of a groomer like 10th to enjoy a short bump line, all you have to do is lap Vickery and literally over half your run is in the bumps. It's a really slow lift, yes, but you can pass the time by watching the kids wipeout in the mini-park on Frannies. The lift rarely has a line, which is a nice change from the quads.

Other than that, lapped 10th and Smith which were full of loose crud and LSGR... the 2-3" burst of snow between 6:30-8:30 really dressed them nicely.

If anyone from Wawa is reading this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE leave the bumps on Hitchcock alone (other than the top 1/4 of the field, those need help)... I've truthfully never seen bumps in good of shape at Wachusett as the ones on Hitch right now. I'll be back Monday. I'm now more excited for my next Wawa day than I've ever been

IIRC, before they opened the Victory Bowl section, they used to seed the lower section of Hitchcock, it was somewhat short at times.

Hmm..... I might head over there to check out the lines. Feels like I'm chasing good mogul lines instead of chasing snow storms :-?

Was there thursday, Hitchcock was the only trail I didn't ski. I hope they keep these moguls up, the ones on Tenth to get very Icy after a day or 2. Hitchcock doesn't see to much traffic anyways. If those bumps do have to go it would be nice if they seeded Piece of Cake.

The problem with Tenth is not icy. The formation of the bumps for a lack of a better word "sucks", it does not allow turns in a direct line. It's formed so that you can go to the top for a turn and then go down to another top to turn again. Been there for spring skiing, saw the ski instructors practice that all day long; one of them was pretty good and was coaching the rest of his buds on this tech.
