Wachusett

Packed machine made powder

My first ski day of the season. So I haven't seen an "intro" section in this forum so let me do it here. My name is Steve and I'm from Ashby Ma. I'm 61 years old and have been skiing since '62. The equipment was a bit different back then. Last year was my first year back to skiing in 5 long years due to a knee injury and the need to get a knee replacement, which I finally did. So this was my first trip out this year.

Nice cold Friday. I was on the mountain at 9:30AM and skied till noonish. The skiing was perfect except the snow making on the Polar express so I decided to stay on Minuteman for the first day.

There was no crowd at all. Went up the lift many times by myself. Just no lines on either lift. Skiing got a little cruddy in spots near the afternoon.

I went in the lodge about noonish as I was thinking I might meet a friend, but he didn't show. I was going to get lunch but they didn't have much ready and there was more a line at the food counter than anyplace else. $2.50 for a small bottle of Polar Seltzer water (they own the company). I'll brown bag it from now on at WaWa.

I got to give them credit for their snow making. They have a least 3/4 of the mountain covered completely. Grooming is almost too good. My legs were rubber by 3:00ish so I called it a day. I've got one of their Bronze passes so I can ski week-days and nights.

WaWa is a great place for nights and week-days, I haven't been there on a week-end day, But don't think I'd want to as I've seen how crowded it gets and the mountain is just not big enough to spread the crowd out. Traffic even gets heavy on week-nights many days. No weekends for me.

Ski your buns off.

Welcome Steve - live only 45 minutes from Wa-Wa but only get up there 1X per year. Would be a passholder if I could ski days midweek.

AZ is a great place to talk Wa - a lot of Wa regulars on here and the TR's from WA (notably from Zand and Sky among others) are solid gold when planning a trip to Wachusett.

It's a lot diff from Epic where the one Wa thread we participate does it all, AZ is focused more on getting the info out and moving on......either way it is all good.

We'll def catch you on the hill at Wa sometime this season!

Surprised you didn't chose the same handle here, but I read your excellent, upbeat posts on Epic and the connection was easy to make!

I am not a big player on here post count wise(actually not a big player post count wise anymore on Epicski either) but I will say welcome as well!

Midweek is the only reason I can see to be a pass holder. Even then, it can get crowded at nights! Don't these kids get homework?

Hey! Thanks for the welcome. Epic has a lot of good info, but I think they need a new mouse to crank the computer wheel or something because it's so painfully slow it's unbearable. Maybe they are a victim of their own success.

Good point about the handle. I guess I should pick on and stick with it. The name is Steve and I was pretty amazed when AZ allowed me to use that as a handle.

I am sitting here thinking I may get back up there tonight. I hear Saturday nights are great up there.

Ski your buns off! (I think this was a ski manufacturers motto in the 70s and I've always like it!) :daffy:

Both forums allow you to set signatures....go for it!

I like "shaddap" and my italian videos the best!

Feel free of course to click on the Italians, just turn the sound down and enjoy the free demo team lessons!

Once all the club & school buses leave, it quiets right down. After about 8:00, it's a veritable ghost town. I'm a passholder there- I board midweek nights, typically once a week, and ski weekends with my kids.

Steve, congrats on the knee redux! And welcome back to skiing.

If you skied all day...then the rubber legs are a badge of honor!

For the first time out in five years...the Minuteman lift was probably a really smart move. Although Wa is small....and the terrain can be less than thrilling...it's certainly convenient and a great place to keep skills honed and, with that Bronze pass...you can ski your ass off midweek mornings all season long.

Enjoy!

Thanks Sky, I got back up there last night. My legs are now officially rubber.

I couldn't resist buying one of the Wachusett baseball caps that says "est. 1965" but I was skiing there a few years before that. The Wachusett Mt. history page even shows the T-bars as being installed in '60 and '62. I was a little mountain rat back then.

I bought a new set of Fischer Progressor 8s for the season, but I'm not using them until after Christmas so my wife can put a bow on them and throw them under the tree! I can't wait though.

The whole deal is so great for me to have the ability to ski back! For those that have never suffered loss of their physical ability to ski (walk, etc).... don't take for granted your God give health! What a gift to be able to ski again!

Now I get to ride my motorcycles all the other seasons, and then Ski My Buns Off for the winter! Life is good!
