Resort or Ski Area: Waterville Valley

Conditions: PP, FRGR

Trip Report: It felt like winter. I had to go in once to warm up my hands! Best runs of the day were on Periphery which had 2-3 inches of snow on top of groomed. That was good for a few nice runs. Rest of what I skiied was a mix of PP, and groomed granular. All in all a good day. Didn't ski Ciao or Gema. Don't have much experience with Waterville, and I wasn't sure (at the time) if they were groomed, there were no blue options over there, and I don't know how difficult the black trails are.

They were making snow on valley run all day.

Thanks for the report.

Hopefully they will have the Quadzilla area open soon...I'd like to make it up to Waterville but the novice options are otherwise limited IMO.

I guess I give the nod to WV by a bit, but it is not really fair based on when the snow fell and also it snowed while I was there (forgot to mention that), about an inch or so.

Loon novice runs were good last week. I can only assume they have gotten better. Where are you finding novice runs you like?

Thanks for the info...I also have passes for Loon and I'll be going there sometime this season.

I've only been to Waterville once, and the conditions were "firm" with some manmade dust on crust. When I went, I thought that Valley Run was nice, albeit a bit crowded. The terrain from the main quad was doable for solid intermediates but a bit steep for lower skill levels.

Sunapee is a good place for novice runs. With the exception of the liftline trail (which is only open if there's a lot of natural snow), everything in the South Peak area is nice, and even though the upper part of Ridge is a blue, it's pretty mellow, and as long as there's decent snow on it it's a nice trail for novices as well. It can get a bit crowded there on a good snow day.

Other smaller places that have good novice runs are Pats Peak (real mellow stuff in the Valley area and a nice length green from the summit) and Crotched (the winding green off of the double lift is nice except for a bit of a flat runout).

Only been to Wachusett once, but IIRC most of the trails off of the smaller HSQ were fine for "solid" novices. Main turn-off there would be crowds.
