I know I'm a dying breed, but I don't wear a helmet. Almost my whole crew wears one and bugs me cause I don't. I own one and try to wear it once in a while, but I always dump it after an hour or so. I now you're safer wearing one, but you'd be safer still if you wore one with a face mask or if you also wore some kind of body armor. Where does it stop?

Then again my youngest fell last year head first on ice and got away with a little black and blue. I know it would have been alot worse without a helmet on.

I guess I'll try again this year, but I just don't like wearing one. I can't get use to it. I'm conflicted on this one.

A helmet will take care of your brain in case of an accident....common sense will take care of the rest...

Wearing Helmet?

Not again! Didn't we beat our heads (with or without a helmet) against the wall on this issue last season? I wear mine, I don't care what anyone else (that I don't know or love) does!

i started putting the brain bucket on two or three years ago. the only time i go without a helmet is when it is extremely cold and i need airtight no skin exposed cover in which i utilize a hat and neck warmer for full protection from the elements. i have one or two low impact knocks to the head which would have really hurt without a helmet. that really is a helmet's specialty. it is widely known that the higher the impact speed, the less a helmet will be effective in protecting someone's head. but it is essential for those low impact weird freak occurences in which it really does help save some brain cells.

I never wear a helmet and I don't need one! I've had my share of head trauma and the loss of many higher brain functions really hasn't effected my now meaning less life. (Well, I can't ski, or drive a car biger than a big wheel, and my F&%$!#g wife left me because of the god-damned trauma-induced F&%$!#g Tourettes syndrome.)

I hate these discussions. Where's my crack pipe?

I always wear my helmet. I just feel naked without it on. I take my fair share of branches to the head so it's always good to have on. I find Giro helmets to be extremely comfortable and I don't even notice I have it on.

Where are all you non helmet wearing people in the poll?

I wear mine when it's bitterly cold..other than that, this season is with my brand new AlpineZone baseball hat!

Besides, my head itches a lot with it on.

Anyway, got the rest of the brood to wear them. The kids confidence level has gone through the roof because of it...which might be a bad thing....

I started wearing a helmet because I want my kids to wear one...need to set a good example. I thought I would hate it, but I've grown accustomed to it and really prefer it when I'm in the woods or on something scary steep (50 degrees +).

My main complaint with hats is that they itch, even with a fleece liner. Never have that issue with my helmet. I noticed that rivercOil prefers a hat when it's cold, but I'm the opposite...the helmet seems warmer to me when it's frigid.

The only time I don't wear one is in the spring when it's warm. Since the snow is softer then and I'm not in the woods often, it doesn't seem dangerous to me. I'll even let my 2 oldest boys do without, but we stay clear of other skiers as much as possible when they don't wear them.

What - be a crappy skier, take drugs and go skiing in the woods late in the day by yourself?

Dude made some big mistakes... We can all learn from...

I'm in the same camp here. I started wearing my Giro Nine last season. It took all of three hours to get used to it and it now feels completely natural. I didn't expect to wear it all the time at Reggae Fest at the Loaf in April, but the conditions and weather we more like March than April so I kept it on.

As for the example aspect, my daughter will start skiing next season and I want to be a good example for her. Some folks are in the "do as I say, not as I do" camp, but I think a little reinforcement by wearing one as well can't hurt.

By the way, I lost one the inserts in my Giro Nine. Do most ski shops sell just the inserts, or is there anywhere online I can purchase one?

Try a shop first...they usually have extras lying around that they'll sell...if you know the shop well, they'll probably just give you a few.
