Date(s) Skied: 3/27/04

Resort or Ski Area: Stowe

Conditions: Spring - heavy cement, dense fog

Trip Report: Friends of mine were getting married at Stowe so I took the trip. I stayed at the Stowe Motel - great value, excellent room, I paid the same price for a DUMP in the No. Conway area 2 weeks ago.
The morning of the wedding I decided not to use my own skis and went to get a pair of demos. I got Volkl 4*'s. My friends that were getting married needed to rent equipment for a couple other friends that made the trek from Iowa to attend the wedding so they were there as well.
Getting to the mountain was a little tough. It had rained most of the day before and all night which caused a driveway (hill) to wash out. The road was limited to one lane and while they cleared the major part of the spill it was totally closed.
We all pulled into Stowe at about 8:45, got our tickets and booted up. On the first ride up the hill on the Mansfield Triple one of the guys from Iowa decided to try to touch the ground where the lift gets real low and ended up losing one of his skis. The Groom, who is a patroller at another area, went to retreive the ski. This took some time as he over shot it the first time. It was on Hackett's Highway, which was closed.
The wedding was supposed to start at 10, but because of the ski mishap it didn't start until almost 10:30. It was held at the intersection of Chapel Lane and the Toll Road near a stand of white birches. The wedding was very small with only 12 in attendance. It was a short, but very nice ceremony performed by a Vermont Judge who was also a friend of the Bride and Groom.
After the ceremony was over we all hit the slopes. It was VERY foggy. We were fortunate to have 2 Stowe Instructors with us who acted at trail guides through out the day. Because of the thick fog, and having 2 relatively new skiers (the guys from Iowa), we stuck to the Blue and Green trails. It was so foggy that even those in bright colors disappeared from sight if they were more than 10 feet away. Every so often, to keep the group together, we would stop.
Until about noon the skiing was pretty good, but then the sun started to break through a little and the snow got very soft and heavy. I have a lot of difficulty in cement because of a previous injury. Just before lunch we decided to take a run down Gondolier...that was even heavier wet snow than we had encountered skiing the triple. On one of our head count stops I fell. I was at a complete stop. A person stopped above me and For some reason I lost my balance. Somehow, my right ski crossed over and came to rest on the left side of my left ski. I fell forward and ended up doing a face plant, my head down hill and hands burried up to my shoulders where I had put them in front of me to block my fall. I was stuck, I couldn't move. The bride released my skis and then I was able to get up. My gloves stayed in the snow when I pulled my hands out. I guess it was really kind of funny, I know I could not stop laughing.
After lunch I decided to call it a day. I really was not supposed to be on skis because of an earlier accident, but had to be so I would not miss the wedding.

Here are some pictures of the wedding

Wonderful story, great storytelling!

I loved the procession through the raised ski poles...

I can picture that faceplant - I've been attacked by snow snakes myself like that :D
