My money is on Woodbury, the guy only needs a few snow cannon to open. Yeah it is short, expensive, and serviced by a rope tow  But it is skiing.

What ever happened to early season (October) skiing at Okemo??

I'm betting Bretton Woods and Okemo beat Killington this year for opening day.
Didn't Bretton Woods only have the Learning Center open when they first opened up last year?

I'm sure that we can have all kinds of discussions on who wins the opening day contest this coming season. I'd rather wait a few weeks, however, than travel 2 - 3 hours in the beginning of November for a couple hundred feet of vertical...

Hammer you right on target. I think it was on a Wed and it was until the weekend before there was any vertical. IT was free though until they had a real trail. I'll be waiting for a real run also.

God, how I miss the old days at Killington. I must have nagged the poor lady at the main switchboard to death. Are you open yet? NO Are you open yet? NO :D :) 8)

My brother used to kid me that they would put the phone reciever next to a running snowmaking gun when I called, say nothing, then hang up.

My wife is joking with me, that as desperate as most of us are for snow, there will be a 40+ person Alpinezone skier pile up at the top of the first ski area to open for the season

Yep...the good thing is that, for me, a day at one of the smaller areas closer to home (Crotched, Pats) would be just fine for a season opener.

Just so no one thinks I'm being too picky...I'd be more than happy to go to BW in November and ski in the learning center if I didn't have to drive so far to get there.

I'd even pay for the ticket -- as long as it wasn't full price.

Mannnnn, I CAN'T WAIT!!!

I'm ready to CARRRRRVE some cordouroy, you know?

I'm going crazy with anticipation!

I was on some other ski message boards and no one seems to care about the upcoming season. There is one in particular that just posts stupid stuff that doesn't have anything to do with skiing at all. It's all sex and fart jokes.

I'm SOOOOO glad I found you guys!

Hey, are any of you considering early season turns out west?

I have a lot of flyer miles, and am thinking that a long weekend is in order for our family if it pukes in Oct/Nov and things are looking cushiony. We went to Utah last early season. I'm thinking CO this year if nature cooperates.

 I wish AZ and TGR could get along. There are some diehards here who do enjoy genuine BC adventure.
I know and I agree, the east doesn't measure up to the west in terms of snow and terrain, but some of you guys are from the east so you know what it's like. I envy the fact that you guys are out there enjoying the goods.

Yeah, there are some novices and intermediates here, but we all started out as beginners at some point. I know, you guys were born wearing goggles and skis.

Well, I was born underwater, actually. At this funky birthing clinic.

But yeah, the guys on the TGR board are totally lame. They rip on anyone who is not cool enough because they don't ride super fat skis and drop 50 footers. I just like to cruise high-speed groomers on a sunny day, you know? What's wrong with that. And I'm not cool enough becasue I still ski in a one-piece and use short, narrow carving skis. Hey, those skis RAIL! I have all the fun in the world!

I posed that question to Bretton Woods in the Az Challenge. I think BW opeing 1st is a possibility. My 1st turns will be at Sunday River of Killington I would think. Like BVibert I'm cheap my pass covers those places.
\
i picked BW to open first last year, but no dice. i do not think they have the commitment and guts it takes to go for it. then again, neither does kmart so we are left with a dinky hill in CT for the honors in the eastern US.

in either case, i am now close enough that i can justify a short drive to hike for some turns when ever the snow guns get turned on 8)

Is it? I heard the whole place was kinda flat (even by CT standards). How steep is the patch they open first?

The first pitch that they open is fairly steep, but it is about 10-12 short turns long  It's also done more for snowboarders as they make snow on some portable jumps of some kind. I am not a snow boarder so I do not know a better description :dunce:

Last year I hiked for my first turns. My avatar is a picture taken by Laseranimal (from TGR) on that day in early November at Killington. That was the weekend before opening day. I couldn't make opening day so I opted to hike for my first turns. It took almost 2 hours to hike to the top of Rime but boy did it feel good to finally get to ski after the long summer hiatus.

Edit: Sorry, forgot that I have yet to move my avatar to this site. I will try to correct that soon.
