I need some help boys! What are some useful, affordable, fun Father's Day gift ideas. It's for someone like you, so think of something you would want. What do ya think?...oh yeah, keep it clean. I know what you all really want. ;-)

NOT a tie! ;)

Seriously, I'm not sure. I'm terrible with telling people what I want for gifts, let alone anyone else... Maybe some new ski gloves or something, or poles, or bump skis, or... my favorite, something returnable so I can get whatever I really want/need....

Permission to quit my job, tickets and spending cash for the remainder of Phish tour? In other words, a license to be 19 again

Better yet: Gift card. Kinda lame for the giver, but I love getting them if they are for cool stores, and I'm faaaaaar from the shopping type.

Me too, but a lot of people hate giving them.

Music to a father's ears is an unsolicited offer of help with something. Especially if it's doing a task I detest. If that doesn't work, take him out somewhere free of obligations, pressure or responsibility. Like fishing or something. You drive, get the gear, etc. At this point, we don't need more things.

One of the times my father remembered most was when we drove back to NY from Boston across route 2, stopped at the Deerfield river and just enjoyed the water and the the out of doors. He talked about it for years.

Sorry to sound sappy, but it's the time he doesn't get with you any more (after wiping your butt and you throwing up on him for many a sleepless night.)

I wish I had the opportunity you still have. The years go by too fast.

Good Luck!

Sweet. I like your thinking. Thanks for the idea. It sounds fun for me too!

As a 55-year-old dad, I agree wholeheartedly with Billski. In my family, with my friends and in my job, I'm often The Organizer ... of trips, ski outings and such. No complaints, but a great gift -- anytime -- would be for someone else to Organize The Whole Thing and just invite me along. I'd enjoy it because I wasn't involved in the planning, and also because I'd get to find out what somebody else would choose.

Other ideas:

My wife and I have a Mother's Day/Father's Day tradition: do as many tasks that have piled up on the Honey-Do list as possible. I'm looking forward to some mended pants this Sunday. Really.

One time my teenaged son made me a CD of 15 songs he'd learned were my favorites when I was growing up. I listen to that thing constantly. Fun to think of why each song made the list and what I was doing when the song came out. I hope he'll put together another one.

Along a similar line, my daughter made me CDs of albums by artists she thought I would like to know better. She said she appreciated how my wife and I had shaped her musical tastes, and that she wants to share her tastes with us.

Final thought: no to a tie, but yes to a tie with a shirt that matches!

big heapin' pile of waffles in the morning and a card signed by the kids does the trick for me. i don't think of mother's day or father's day as a time for gift giving, beyond cards and flowers and chocolates for mom. doing something fun and enjoyable as a family is the best gift (as long as i get a pile of waffles in the morning).

Bill is right on target -- By the time are kids are grown up we have got all the STUFF we need so the most wonderful gift is the gift of a son or daughter presence . BE THERE with YOUR DAD , do some ACTIVE listening , TELL HIM HOW YOU FEEL about YOUR CHILDHOOD and be sure to mention all kinds of CRAZY inside family humor that centers around funny or yeah even embarrassing situations . Make him Breakfast take him golfing or biking or hiking or fishing whatever he does to just UNWIND .

But remember as YOUR Dad -- he NEEDS you now to still be HIS KID , even tho HE KNOWS that he is NO longer the HEAD COACH but Just a Consultant in your life !!

Have fun with it !

A fun day with the family - maybe a little BBQ action - that's all I'd look for.

My plan too - have b'fast with my wife + kids this Sun (my father in-law will be there too) - then my parents are coming over for a lunchtime BBQ - probably just sit back, grill some steaks, have a drink or two, watch the kids run around and then watch the US Open on TV with my dad + kids - pretty good Father's Day in my book :)

I read the question as you are asking for your husband on behalf of the kids not your Dad, in that case let him sleep in then give him some free time, or if he is a morning guy, let him get up early and do whatever he wants, fish, golf, ride, whatever with no , and this is important, "what time will you be back" - that puts a damper on the free time activities for me.

For material things for guys like me (us):

Nice beach chair - I would never buy that for myself.
Nice Grill tools - I would use plyers and a spackling tool before I go out and spend $ on actual grill tools and we all know the tools we are using have seen better days.
Gear for whatever he is into - fishing bag, dozen prov1's, new camelbak system.

IMHO a card made by the kids will top them all.
