What Is Your Favorite Ski Highway?

I was pondering this question myself when I came across this list.

I am a HUGE fan of VT's Rt. 100 but there are some great roads in this list. I have done the Powder Highway, and it is VERY underrated!

What is your favorite?

I probably would have to go with VT 100 as my favorite for sheer variety and snowfall depth.

I would not call Rt 100 a highway. If it only has 1 lane in each direction it ain't no highway.

Agreed. Heading in and out of N.Conway can be an absolute nightmare.

For Vermont, Route 17 from Bristol to Waitsfield is a ride. I used to drive it multiple times a week in college to get to and from Sugarbush. Driving up and along MRG is a treat. Love the turns.

It is no surprise that the article lists Route 100. Not to rain on the parade, but in my experience Route 100 is a terrible road--crooked, full of potholes, frost heaves, wildlife, black ice, and it is not as well cared for by VTrans as other roads, especially given its importance. There are many nice sections, such as from Waterbury up through to Morrisville, but a lot of it is isolated and rough.

For the west, I am a big fan of the MT. Rose Highway in Tahoe. Driving past current and former ski areas as the road twists, turns, and climbs, with snowbanks 10 feet tall. Scenic vistas are breathtaking

Mt Rose road is great as is the road up to Sugarbowl

It's very rare that I've had a Friday night ride be awful. It really depends on the weekend. Coming home, there's more traffic between 10 and noon on Sunday than if you ski Sunday and come home mid-afternoon.

There's just enough passing lanes, but if you catch a bad break, it can be a long ride. From my house, door to door (NH place is in Intervale) is usually 2h 30m, 2m 20m on a good day. I don't think it's ever taken more than 3h.

You just need to know how to get around North Conway and North Conway Village. If you can avoid those 2 areas, it's much more bearable.

I would 2nd this or the one that goes up BCC (can't remember the #). On a side note one of my favorite highways for skiing doesn't really go by any ski areas (well 1 is within sight of it) but it gets me to where I want to go and that would be I-87.

Route 100 sucks. Yes, most of Vermont's ski areas are located off Route 100. But for driving and destination purposes, it is a terrible road and rarely used for direct access unless you are multi-daying and driving between multiple areas. The only part of 100 that I really enjoy driving is between Bush and Killington. Long stretch of road and very scenic. Otherwise, terrible road for driving. Lots of towns, poor road conditions, lots of traffic, etc.

For almost all ski areas except Stowe, 100 isn't the road you jump off the exit and spend most of your time driving. Usually 100 is the last stretch following the real access road.
