What mountain would you pick?

My hubby has to pick a mountain to bring the boy scouts for a skiing trip. Most of these boys have never skied before. It should be a place that is not too expensive but also not a rundown place. It would be a one-day trip from Long Island. We would like it to be a nice experience for all of them so that maybe we can have a few more converts to the sport. I was thinking about Windham and Plattekill. Where else would the rest of you recommend?

From Nassau with kids? Mountain Creek for a day trip. Real easy hill. You can even get there a bit late and night ski. Figure on 1:45 to 2:00 w/o traffic from the South Shore.

Day trip for scouts?

Butternut in Great Barrington MA is also an excellent place to take a group of beginners. They do good work teaching, and nobody can get lost!

Its to far probably, but Pat's peak does alot of work with scouts, both boys and girls. I believe they let you sleep over. TB did this with MS. TB with a girl scout troop. Easy he had a hotel room off site. :D

definitely something in western MA or the catskills sounds good. a short drive would be key. any small to mid-sized mountain is ideal for first timers and beginners. no need to take them to a big mountain or resort.

Whistler Blackcomb... that should make for a challenge to be done in a day, but you know, the best advice I've ever given anyone is not to take my advice.

Bromley has a 'boy scout weekend' every year that looks like fun for the scouts (think jamboree on skis) and misery for every one else. Call the mountain and find out details. Bromley would be a haul for a day trip, but a great weekend spot at a medium sized mountain with great infrastructure for learning.

That was funny. :D Marc, maybe you should think of becoming a boy scout leader yourself. Tou'd bring alot of fresh ideas.

Pats Peak in Southern New Hampshire also has a great scout weekend that we took our Girl Scouts to as well...but I've seen a lot of Boy Scouts there. The The Green Mountain Council, VT BSA also books ski trips and weekends at Killington, Pico, Jay, etc. to name a few...so if you want some real skiing, look them up.

:D

PM me for more info...BSA Leader and Eagle Scout here!

P.S. The Pats Peak weekend is usually the first or second in March and included overnight accomodations, meals, lessons, rental, and ticket as well as some entertainment. Night and day skiing and riding as well as tubing.

The GMC BSA has a link on their page to the ski trips.

And HERE is my trip report for the scout weekend this year.

We went to that one year when I was a Scout. We 'camped' in a local school gym for two nights and skied for two days. It was a blast! :D

I concur. Decent vertical (1,000') but a very gentle pitch.

He's already been banned by the BSA.

I was thinking Pat's Peak, too (thanks to TB), until I saw the LI day trip part. Beyond that, nothing to add but the snide remark.

I'll second that...I used to coach kids at Hunter; great beginner terrain. Not sure how many of my old friends still teach there, but I'd be glad to recommend an instructor if you're interested.

Belleayre has a seperate beginner area that is somewhat isolated from the rest of the mountain. My 5 year old likes to ski there, the instructors are very friendly and the prices are reasonable.

As much as I like Hunter, the instructors leave alot to be desired, no offense to DMC.

Mohawk, and Ski Sundown in CT also have decent learn to ski areas, and are not very expensive.

why would I take offense...
Your only talking about a bunch of my friends -including JimG.. :)

Also - I've had my family go through the process at the learning center a few times - and it went flawless - from rentals to lessons...

As well as lot's of my friends take weekly clinics and go back every year...
