I know everybody is bashing Killington right now. I agree with what you are saying about having quality trails open.

And I also think that Killington will by far have more than anyone open for thanksgiving. They have been blowing for just as much time as Mount Snow and have HUGE snowmaking capabilities.

Killington would be fine if they would just get rid of the skiers :dunce:

Sunday River has 5 trails open now and were aggresively making snow on Right Stuff, Sunday Punch, Lazy River and Risky business. It looks like they will expand very quickly if the weather holds.

The river will be the place on turkey day weekend. Sure Crotched mountian can pump out the snow. Its a different kind of moutain. Thats a good thing for all.

You can always debate the conditions when your open. When your not.... Ski season has started .

Jerry you sound gumpy in your post..

Ok the "competition" for being the first to open is now over. Opening up first is nice but come on now, a couple of crowded, maybe icy, trails and a terrain park or two, a beginners hill .. usually opening first has to do more with the weather than snow making prowl nest. Now when the temperatures cooperate, who can lay down the most coverage the quickest shows me who is the best when it comes to snow making. That is why I am not concerned that the guns haven't fired up at Crotched or that Attitash isn't open yet. SO .. who will have the most coverage and be percent wise have the most terrain open by Thanksgiving weekend? For me .. this is the true start of the early season.

You're right...it doesn't necessarily make a mountain the best snowmaking wise. But I think it's their agressiveness thats to be admired. And after 7 months of not skiing, I'll gladly take a crowded bunny slope. Yes it does wear off after a few times out but in the beginning it's not all that bad.

I'm all for early openings..if it wasn't for early snowmaking..my thighs wouldn't be sore right now. Thanksgiving weekend is close and temperatures don't look very good..so areas like Crotched and Attitash who didn't take advantage of the recent cold window might have a very limited Thanksgiving opening..or may have to push back their openings..The temperatures have cooperated and a few resorts took advantage..the others will have some catching up to do..

I was just thinking the same thing GSS.I was at Cannon this weekend and they had fan guns running at the base area only Friday and Saturday night. This week does not look good for snow making temps which leaves less than a week to get ready for Thanksgiving.

I really wonder if they gimped out Crotched in favor of Mt Snow, cash wise. It does take people to run guns, and if they're budget is cut down for early season stuff.. Would make sense. Crotched does have issues with early and late season because people just don't come.

You're right .. Crotched is longer the premier Peak Resort mountain in new England. Mount Snow first and Attitash second have taken over those roles. I am sure some cash went for improvements at the other mountains that a few years past would have been spent at Crotched. Like .. the lift would have been extended to the true summit this past summer. But a few improvements were made .. cutting a new trail and making milky way wider .. new snow making pipe laid. I see there was no Crotched Mountain challenge this year and I think in part because they didn't want these kind questions to take away from the PR going for Mt. Snow and Attitash. I believe the guns would have been going sooner just for the PR but they get that now from Mt.Snow and Attitash. Crotched now has a new supporting role to play instead of being the premier mountain it was last year.
Crotched still rules the night and still is the premier mountain for night ops in my book.

Well, I'll be trying to damnedest to beat your second chair from last year, thats for sure. Then later you can come point and laugh as I try to learn to snowboard. :-D I want to take a few lessons early to see how much I like it, and I figure if the earlier season snow is good, less crowded and less 5 year old pointing and lughing at me :-D

icy crowded beginner trail?

the initial post on this thread suggested that the terrain available last weekend was a few icy crowded beginner trails.

I skied at Mount Snow on Saturday, I was surprised to see how uncrowded it was, and it didn't seem too icy to me. The early season conditions did make the contours of the trails more noticeable, so rather than the wide open grromers that I am used to there was some challenge.

It was just 2 top to bottom trails on Saturday, but they weren't icy, crowded, or for beginners.

Not icy, Not Beginners...

I also skied Mt. Snow this weekend. I'm lucky enough to be local and skied 8-10:30 Sun, and 9-10:30 Mon. Although there was only one run down the main face and one run down the north face, both runs were covered side to side with february quality snow. All
I can say is, Mt. Snow rocks with the fan guns. Skiing in early November on snow this good is unbelievable!!! In no way did being the first to open in Vermont compromise the quality of the experience. I imagine that as temps allow, Mt. Snow will continue to open more and more trails with similar quality snow. I was totally impressed with the skiing this weekend.:grin::daffy:
