Mt Snow Saturday was by best day on skis ever!
Boot to shin deep powder runs all day. Huge soft bumps later in the day. Just incredible.

I skied 7:30am -4:00pm with only one very short lunch break.

The mountain reported 56" in the four days Weds- Saturday and the last 15-16" that came down on Friday and Friday night was nice dry powder. There must have been 100-200 people at first tacks Saturday morning.

Thanks for going away Dr Jeff you really delivered this time.

Call me crazy, but I'll take a foot of light 'n dry over four feet of wet 'n heavy. Saturday was a good day, but I probably enjoyed my other Plattekill day this season more (although my bases and edges would disagree).

skied saturday & sunday at k. got more fresh saturday but sunday was almost as good in other ways. was mid-week better, probably but wasn't there. easily my top 10 weekend in the east, maybe top 5. the lack of ice and total coverage on some of k's gnarliest runs like julio & anarchy was amazing. even throne could be skied with absolute impunity. fiddle was off the hook. very rare do you get that combination of conditions in the east.

Now that's "rotten spoiled brat" talk! ;)

What mattchuck says. Sure I'd rather have champagne, but I'll take the house wine if there are no other options. I wouldn't stay home because the 4' was heavy! Us in the east have to put everything in perspective!!!

how did whiteface make out snow wise. i gotta imagine whatever fell was 100% snow. no mixing for you that far north, west and up in elevation.

Really well. website says 47 inches. The Slides opened which is always a treat. All the glades where open. You would have loved all the soft bump lines. The whole place skied great.

Here's some pics:

Cannon Feb 1997
there was an april fools storm sometime in my past that rocked

In general, I would agree with you. If I am skiing in powder, I would rather have a foot of dry powder than 5 feet of wet stuff. However, what I loved about the 5 foot dump at Belleayre was that it covered all the ice and hard snow on the otherwise trickly mogul runs. A foot of light powder would not have had the same effect.

People seemed excited about skiing through 5 feet of wet powder, but I saw very few people who could actually ski it well. Coming up the Tomahawk lift on Saturday morning, I saw about 10 people on Dot Nebel and more than half of them had fallen and were struggling to get up. I had never seen anything like it before. Folks who looked like good skiiers were dropping like flies. It was really tough to ski and not much fun for me. What made it great for me was the afternoon and all of Sunday after the trails had been tracked a bit more. I am not a great mogul skier, but I was eating up the soft moguls that covered the whole mountain.

I have had better conditions in Jackson Hole and Garmisch, but I have never had two days of skiing that I enjoyed more than this weekend at Belleayre. This is partly because I am now a better skier than I was before. I also got a big boost of fatherly pride as I watched my 8-year-old lead the way. I remember having her ski between my legs just a few seasons ago. It is amazing how fast kids can learn. All this contributed to my most gratifying ski experience ever.

I would take two feet of dry over four feet of dense and heavy. That said, I got more face shots and white rooms last Wednesday than all other previous days combined. That said, other than Wednesday, the past five have not been even close to epic for the other day I skied (Saturday) or based on other reports in New England that I have read. New York... obviously a different story. Wednesday was my best day of the season and a top ten overall (though probably lower end of the top ten). I would rate the past week a 4 overall with Wednesday being a 5.

Sat and Sun would probably rate in the top 25% of all my EC days. However, this year, January 3rd at Cannon solidly trumps everything else. 20+" of the lightest EC POW I've ever seen put that day in my top 10 lifetime days.

HPD -- Nice work ---amazing shots , great contrast and gives a real sense for the steepness of the slides when "little Whiteface " in the background looks DISTANT

This past weekend at Hunter were the number 1 days ever there for me.

That's coming from a 30 year passholder.
