for me it was my mother...her mother and father started in the 1930s, my mother started at 6, I started at 3, my daughter started at 18months...my mother's mother skied until she was 93. I had a great time last winter skiing with my mother and daughter (31/2 last winter) and can't wait to get her back out this winter.

Actually, it was my step mother. No one in my family had ever been skiing. When my parents divorced, my dad started dating and she took him skiing and all he could think about was getting me and my brother out there. They took us on our first day-trip and I was instantly hooked.

My parents, but my dad was the original skier of my parents. I was either 3.5 or 4.5 when I first skied.

Going to school in a state that has very long winter!

Oops, the question was not "what" but "who".

Myself.

My beautiful and wonderful girlfriend was the one who finally got me into it... I'd wanted to but never really had the opportunity... I'm very lucky that I have her and that she got me out on the hill.

My Dad took me skiing for the first time when I was in 4th grade at Big Boulder but I didn't ski again or get into it until 6th grade with the ski club..that season I skied 7 days and was hooked..by 8th grade I was skiing double digit days and I haven't looked back since..

My wife and brother-in-law. I was just going to sit in the bar and watch them ski because I was not interested in trying it, but before I knew what was happening, I had a ticket and rentals. I didn't even have a pair of gloves to wear! I have been in love with skiing ever since.

Ultimately it was my Dad but he (having never skied before either) was influenced by a few neighbors.

My Aunts- they had a place a Mt Snow, bought me a pair of Hart Rabbits when I was about 5 and popped me in a week long ski school during Feb vacation, - and then took me numerous weekends and every winter vacation until about high school. They also (now 80) have encouraged my kids as well-- and talked it up so much that my kids had to ski-- which got me back out there two years ago.

Father got me skiing

Very German; first we walk around on the basement carpet with the skis on.
Then when we had snow outside in the yard in Queens NY we did some walking and sliding.
Then the first trip to Fahnestock Ski Area to ride the rope tow in the early 70's.

We moved from Queens to Mass in 1973 to get closer to skiing. Mt Tom Ski Area was only 10 miles away.

Franz who will be 78 this year still skis a few days a week in VT.

mags, video, and myself...

Got myself outdoors in winter.(no more hockey!..LOL), albeit late(early 30s), but SKIING magazines' instructional articles, pics and articles of Scot Schmidt, the Killington Ski School's video(on PBS at the time), and Wachusett's $8 night skiing during the week..all came together to feed the stoke...

My Stepmom.......Canaan Valley, WV circa 1996. i remember not being able to "click" into my skis and then someone came over and hit the bottom of my boot with a ski pole, knocking off the ice and snow. absolutely hated it, my father, and stepmother at the time, but was tackling gunbarrel the next day. been hooked ever since.

Directly: My Brother (Twin Planks) Went on a school trip and hearing his stories, I was hooked before I put skis on.. Though Indirectly I have to thank Mr. Fox (the Guidance Counselor at my Junior High School) he organized ski trips for our school district.

My Parents didn't ski, until after the two of us did. so it really was the school trips back in the early and mid eighties, that got me skiing and eventually snowboarding.

hmmm.......this is a tricky question......
My boyfriend(now husband) taught me how to do a snowplow down a bunny hill. Later he taught me how to "keep up", but I never really learned how to ski until I was 40 and took my first clinic.

I can honestly say that I can thank the love of my life for my passion in skiing. :)

My parents never skiied. I got into it with friends from junior hs. Friday night bus trips the school organized up to vernon vally once a month....

Got back into it because my boys did not want to play basketball so I needed a winter activity to do with them. One of the best things I ever did.
