looks like i torn a ligament in my right thumb and will need surgery to repair. doc called it skiers thumb. meeting the ortho on tues. mostly bummed about the expense (even with insurance) plus having $400 in prepaid tickets not used yet. still plenty of skiing left for me this season, but lift serviced will be all but shot.

happened on the second run of the day and fell on a low pitched natural snow trail. pow covering up the bumps (that were ice hard) and threw me. fell and thumb jammed hard. oh well, thems the breaks lol.

Not fun.

Time to put a brace on and learn to snowboard. Do not tell your physician - he'll be pissed.

Thats sucks!

I tore a couple of ligaments in my left hand last winter (non skiing related). I wore a brace all winter while I skied but pole plants and falls still hurt pretty bad. It seemed like everytime I feel it was to the left on the injured side

Dood, that's the pits. What's the word on down time (or has that been discussed yet?). Sorry to hear about that. Get better soon.

bummer river...swift healing

I did something to my thumb, though less severe in 2001 and never got it repaired at the time because I was a bartender and wouldn't be able to do the job with a cast on. I didn't bother with an MRI, but the doc was pretty confident of at least a minor tear. To this day, even the slightest jam on my thumb, like playing volley ball and it is extremely painful and swells up big time.

moral of the story.....better to get it fixed.

Sorry Steve -- Mend well

I have broken wrists twice before and was able to ski with a brace-------- but with the thumb actively engaged in the poling process maybe a brace /splint won't suffice -- best of luck to you

skiers thumb.

happened on the second run of the day.

+1...except it was on my first race run. One of the folks orgaizing the race saw the whole thing (he was running the bag of coats to the bottom in a snowmobile). He said I went 15' in the air...and the total fall went gate to gate.

He asked if I was alright as I was getting up off the snow, tossing what was left of my gear out of the course.

I shook myself down and noticed my thumb was sore. "This is gonna hurt". I guess I was lucky to only screw up my thumb. I see the Doc (hand specialist) Tuesday. I guess I'll have to wait till then to know what's what.

I've done this thumb/jam thing a lot playing hoops (bottom of the backboard). So I'm hoping it's just a sprain.

Most of the black-n-blue is gone (a week later). Reminds of of ankle injuries.

Steve....speedy recovery!

Hey Big Man sorry bout the thumb! Hope its just a sprain altho they too hurt like hell

I can appreciate your comment re Hoops n' Backboards . Can't tell you how many times i jammed thumbs or pinky's catching a ball from a teamate's pass that was being "saved " from going out of bounds !
AT 6'1" I was too damn small to get in trouble under the boards tho

Thanks for the encouragement WD. I'll let you know how things go Tuesday evening.

HEH...I had a coach who went nuts on one of my team mates during a practice. The team mate gave me a pass which went off my lower shin. The coach stops practice and yells..."6'9" and you throw the ball at his FEET?!

Vindication (since the kid felt I had "bad hands"...which I did until I learned to juggle).

Steve,
Stupid question, since I've never experienced this - why can't you ski??? Can you just leave a pole behind, or is there more to it than I can absorb here?
I am awaiting a visit to the Ortho on Tuesday. The ER put me in a split and advised against turns. I am assuming needing a splint would suggest that another fall on that hand would be very bad. So I am following doctors orders. Assuming I need surgery to fix the ligament, that is going to require time to heal and probably some PT. Without having seen a doc, it seems like a 2 month time line seems likely.

Could I ski right now? Yea, sure. But I would rather focus on full recovery without risk of complications or causing more harm. Going to be smart and follow docs orders... powder be damned.

Just learned tonight, to prevent this, when you are putting your pole straps on, but your hands UP into the straps. A buddy told me that it will prevent this from happening.
