...

Sorry to hear... After surgery and initial healing...the brace and wearing a hockey glove can work great if the fit is right, so there still might be hope...but, as imagined, don't push it...the initial healing is important.

looks like i torn a ligament in my right thumb and will need surgery to repair. doc called it skiers thumb. meeting the ortho on tues. mostly bummed about the expense (even with insurance) plus having $400 in prepaid tickets not used yet. still plenty of skiing left for me this season, but lift serviced will be all but shot.

happened on the second run of the day and fell on a low pitched natural snow trail. pow covering up the bumps (that were ice hard) and threw me. fell and thumb jammed hard. oh well, thems the breaks lol.

Today at Jay was ridiculous, so deep. Also, Black got a lot better by around 11am since they picked up another few inches of snow after opening. Wait... this isn't helping is it? I'm sorry.

BTW, I might be interested in purchasing a few of those tickets from you. Maybe two Stowe ticket?

I am awaiting a visit to the Ortho on Tuesday. The ER put me in a split and advised against turns. I am assuming needing a splint would suggest that another fall on that hand would be very bad. So I am following doctors orders. Assuming I need surgery to fix the ligament, that is going to require time to heal and probably some PT. Without having seen a doc, it seems like a 2 month time line seems likely.

Could I ski right now? Yea, sure. But I would rather focus on full recovery without risk of complications or causing more harm. Going to be smart and follow docs orders... powder be damned.

+1 - also gotta make sure to take care of the thumb/hand for that blossoming golf career of yours! :)

Just learned tonight, to prevent this, when you are putting your pole straps on, but your hands UP into the straps. A buddy told me that it will prevent this from happening.
I never use pole straps while skiing. Ever. Risk of injury (even when gripping through the strap correctly) is too high. This was pure freak impact when hitting the snow.

I have been debating when an acceptable time to start "The Gold Thread 2009" would be!!! ;)

Been reading a lot of books during the winter and have done some indoor stance and grip adjustments. Noticed I had two BIG TIME grip flaws that were really hurting my swing. Also, determined that I was not bending at the waist enough which was creating some 'blocking' of my rotation. And my backswing end position was too far outside which I suspect was leading to a little outside in swing path.

Trust me, not being able to ski for potentially 2 months was not the only thing I was concerned about! Want to hit my local course as soon as they open!

Sorry to hear about the injury Steve. Hopefully it's not as bad as it first appears. I've jammed my thumb on the back sides of icy moguls several times this year. Never bad enough to tear anything though, I think.

Hey Steve, sorry to hear that. You and Linsey Vonn need to sit around the lodge fire place and compare notes on thumb injuries. God speed your recovery.

Nice to see that you've got the bug BAD ;) I undoubtedly will say that in the Northeast Golf and Skiing are the PERFECT pair of sports, since between the 2 you've got all 52 weeks of the year covered, and you're very, very, very unlikely to suffer and injury during golf season that will keep of off the hill! ;)

I'm actually looking forward golfing wise to next week when we'll get to see Mr. Woods tee it up again and start hitting some shots that week in and week out seem to get me saying "how did he do that???"

scored a thumb injury on a forward spill a month ago, certainly a nuisance injury ... if put into a cast/splint, chuck the poles and use a big mitt

Bummer Riv.I've wrecked both thumbs twice. One needed surgery and all were suggested by the doc not to ski. They really need to recommend this. However,I never stopped skiing.Splint that bad boy up and get creative with engaging the pole.I actually used one of those grips without the straps that allowed the pole to stay in my hand without using my thumb.Just make sure your thumb will not be exposed to being extended.I ducktaped my thumb to the pole.I would advise if you do ski to stay off your usual out of bounds terrain and ski the groomers. It's a lot better than not skiing imo.Good luck.

Didn't break docs orders last time I hurt myself. Guys, it just is not worth the risk to me. Call my perspective long term. We all have different risk tolerances. I ain't risking not skiing M.Washington corn just for a few extra pow days.
