Wind Mills

Many years ago Brodie had a wind mill. I was not there often, but I don't ever remember seeing it turning. Now Jiminy is spending millions to have a wind mill installed next to the snow making reservoir. If you read their news release you can see that they have come up with a lot of financing as well as a half million in grant money which makes it look like they are very confident that it will work. My question is, if it will work at Jiminy why didn't it work at Brodie?

No clue, all I can say is that Brian Fairbanks is no dope. I'd bet he had a good reason.

I just thought of something. I was at Jiminy yesterday for the annual ski club advisors picnic. There where some instructors there, where you one of them?

Nope. I just got back from Maine so there were some chores to catch up on.

My guess is the answer to your question lies in the first sentence. There have been a lot of changes in the technology, just in the past 5 years or so. 5 more and wind power will be cheaper than oil or gas generation. It's pretty close, now, and the premium is caused as much by a shortage of equipment as anything else.

Seems like a good thing....

...for ski areas and governments to consider. Essentially the land has already been altered by lift / trail / base operations. Why not toss up a few wind turbines. I personally think they look cool....and we're in desperate times in terms of environmental and economic impacts of fossil fuel consumption.

What about the NIMBYs

A patroller told me at the end of last season that there were some NIMBYs trying to prevent the windmill project from happening. Has Jiminy won that battle yet?

I feel kind of ashamed that I had to look up NIMBY to find out what it meant...

For anyone else that's a little slow like me:
Not In My Back Yard

At least I knew what a Pro Form was... ;) :p

Yes. They have already started to foundation work. You can see pictures on their website.

I'm all for wind power. And I think it's important for ski areas to support it, to help cut back on emissions that can cause global warming.

And more and more of them do.

According to the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), about 30 percent of U.S. ski resorts currently buy wind power. (This summer Okemo joined them.) In fact, 180 ski resorts have now endorsed the National Ski Area Association's Sustainable Slopes Environmental Charter and are taking steps toward improved environmentally friendly policies.

I think they deserve a lot of credit.

This appears to be the tower that the wind mill was on. At least its been put to some use.
