Mellon rarely "completely closes" on windy days. At the Bush and other resorts it does depend on where the wind is coming from. While some of the lifts at Mellon generally go on windhold more often than LP, about 10 days ago most of the lifts at LP went on windhold but Mellon had top to bottom all day.

I don't remember many days, just one comes to mind and it was an early closing about 3PM, this past winter so far, that Mellon had all the lifts on windhold and was "compeletly closed".Mellon also had an early closing awhile back due to a regional power outage. If the GMX goes down for an extended period of time, Inverness is usually fired up so some of the terrain remains open and more times than not GMX comes back online.

The past 9 day holiday period as been awesome at the Bush in that there were very few windholds, SBX ran all week and the 40"+ of new pow pow since Wednesday.

Everything I said above is true....except for today. Mellon called it day at 8:15, wow, it was wild up there this morning with knock you on your ass wind gusts but we only pushed one car out of the drink off the top of the Mellon access road. Bummer for today but tomorrow, if the forecasts are true will be epic.

When I got to the locker room at LP this AM, we were listening to the lifts go down, one by one... all of ME, then Valley House, then Castlerock, then North Lynx, then GH and Village. 10 minutes later... we were all sent home... right after I had put my snowboard boots on. It was blowing HARD - Clay Brook could not be seen from the Access Road or the entrance sign.

This is the first time I've seen EVERYTHING shut down. They say there's a first time for everything. Is this the first time we've seen 5 feet in 4 days??? Probably not.

Tomorrow's another day... get the rest now. We'll all need it come 7am.

I ain't neva seen wind like I saw last night! Unbelievable! I made up my mind about half way through my shift that even if we could open lifts, I wasn't skiing!

Tomorrow should be good.

Only mild winds this morning at Burke. All lifts were open and 20+ inches of fresh pow and it is still snowing.

To bad for all of those that consistantly ignore the Burke advice and decide to gamble elsewhere. When those windhold lifts do open, the Green Mtn spine resorts will be absolutely rediculous!

Ironic this is on their website today:
THE BAD NEWS: Mt. Ellen has closed for the day.
THE REAL BAD NEWS: Lincoln Peak might not open today; that's how strong the winds are blowing.

That's what it looked like on Saturday AM at Sugarbush...I should have gone to Burke..it probably would have taken me three hours to get there from Stowe..I hope you had fun today. When I showed up at Stowe, all the lifts were down except the triple which only serves the lower mountain and lift tickets were regular price. I called Mad River and only the double was running so I drove back home. It looks like Sugarbush shut down early today due to winds so tomorrow at the Bust is going to be cherry..I'd head right for Castlerock..anyway 5+ feet in 5 days at Sugarbush/MRG and 4+ feet at Stowe is awesome...I had so many skigasms this last weekend I'm surprised I didn't have premature skijaculation..lol..Have fun!!!!

happy to report that wind was a non-issue a K yesterday! I love when weathermen are wrong! Sounds like all the winds went up to Sugarbush.

when we got to MRG all was on WH, so we and others started calling around for options. BV - full windhold, Stowe - double only, Bush nada. Pico, running. Jay, didn't get a straight answer.

In the end, we stuck around at mrg, with the double then spinning. sure beat driving another our to uncertainty.

So did K, minus the winds. Dumping from start to finish.

I posted as a "for the record" so next time I ask the question, it will be there. Of course direction of winds has a big effect.

Regarding K, were all lifts running? any on wind hold? Certainly with the kmart size of the resort, number of lifts alone empower them to have at least a number of them operable.

I believe all the lifts scheduled to spin were spinning, but I didn't see what they had scheduled beforehand. I only felt 4 or 5 strong gusts the whole day. Lucked out big time. You are right though, wind direction is a big factor.

At Killington, the Snowdon Quad pretty much never goes down, K-1, Northbrook and (it appears), the new SPQ stay up most of the time.
