This could be an ice fishing board and we all could be :puke: and  at the prospect of losing our ice shanties. I thought about that as I was looking down on Lake Sunapee yesterday and seeing the shacks on thin ice.

So here's to lots of :snow: in the immediate future.

An ice fishing board. I don;t think I could handle the excitement. I'd probably have to drink heavily.

But isn't that what ice fishing is all about, drinking heavily?

Here's how Sunapee deals with the weather:

At 6:00 am the temperature is 44 at the summit and 46 at the base with showers. Everyone who purchases a ticket today will receive a free hooded poncho and a complimentary hot beverage coupon. Despite the inclement weather today, the surfaces will be soft wet granular snow. The forecast is calling for precipitation to change to snow tonight with some accumulation possible.

I love hearing how the resorts deal with the weather when it's pretty bad like today. I havn't looked yet but killington is probably saying they got an inch of snow overnight and they are expecting a foot more by tomorrow, of course leaving out the fact that right now its torrential rain.

Actually, the best one I heard was last year during one of the major cold snaps, i.e. when it barely got above zero in Northern Vermont, Jay offered skiers and riders a discounted ticket and two coupons for FREE Hot Chocolate  Whoa. Risk life and limb for HOT CHOCOLATE. Where do I sign up?

i would have been happy with the discounted lift ticket! mad river did that last year during the extreme cold snap (or was that two years ago? damned if i can remember).

hey, it's a january thaw. fairly typical in new england. january has always been one of my least favorite months to ski due to it's tenacity for either cold or crappy weather.

You're right on both counts there

January tends to be a blah month. Usually too cold to snow.

Yep, let's hope that this is the January thaw and that it will be outta here soon.

(Feverishly doing snowdance).

Has anyone ever heard an ice fishing story that did not contain the phrase "Boy did we get hammered" or something similar?

That's like the black box voice recorders on snowmobiles. The most common phrase heard before a fatal accident: "Hold my beer, watch this!"

except this "thaw" started christmas weekend.

3 weeks later it's still warm and rainy. that's more then just a "thaw".

I disagree. We did have some colder temps in that period. Some snow as well. This is much warmer.

Overall it has been mild this winter.

i love to sit back and  when people freak out about the weather. it doesn't snow for two weeks and then it gets warm and rains for one week before a big dump of snow, and all of a sudden folks are ready to hang themselves and a brief warming period is much worse than a typical 'thaw'. we even had a prediction for not much snow until march! bummer for sure, but like the title of the thread states, it could be worse...

Steve is right, any ways after this snow the woods will still be skiable, you'll just want to bring your rock skis (who cares anyways, they are all rock skis)! We're going to get a least a solid foot on the backside of this storm and thats all that really matters, I'd rather ski that with little to no base, than 3 week old bulletproof any day :) :)

Steviec0il, man, I'm with you bud.

No sense it upping the BP over a little liquid precip. Ain't nothin anyone can do about it anyway, and worrying about chit that no one can do anything about it a good way to give yourself an MI at a young age.

Watch some football, drink some brew, laugh it off and be happy folks!

Also, if you're of the female species, I'd like to just put out a permanent invitation to hang out at my humble abode. I seem to be lacking in that department, and I know you want to come keep me company.

And um.... well I'll give you alcohol too, so you have no excuse not to come.

PS- I'm dead sober as I'm writing this right now, how scary is that?

Not scary, but man, you must really want to meet women  Kinda desperate, huh?

Advice Number One: DON'T be too obvious in your desire.
