by the way..I think this particular rivalry is one of the best in professional sports.....it wouldnt be baseball without the Yanks/Boston rivalry....just MHO....

We're in the same boat for starting pitching...
Josh Johnson? Probably one of the worst starters that I've seen in Boston in quite some time. He is actually worse than Clement - which is saying a lot.

I stand by my assertion that I made in a thread a while back - it won't come down to just the Yanks and Sox, like we would all like to think. There will be other teams fighting hard for the wild card and we may not get to see a postseason Sox - Yanks showdown this year. There are so many other good teams in the AL Central this year, as well as the Blue Jays. It should be some interesting baseball down the stretch.

Boston fans relive failures? Never . Billy Buckner will never dare to show his face in this town again.

Agreed..plenty of good baseball left and I think out of all...the East is the weakest in the division....thats my opinion though....foor some reason the Central and west always look stronger to me....eh...whatever...

FWIW I am a Sox fan. Have been all my life. When I was introduced to baseball, Red Sox was the ONLY team mentioned. I'm sure for a great many of NY fans it was the same. I think that the rivalry has only been hyped recently because the Red Sox owners saw it as a way to make $$$$. Granted the Yankees have always been archrivals, but it seems that since 2002 or so the thing has hit high gear. They now are selling "memberships to Red Sox nation" so you can get a card, some E-mails, and basically the ability to say "I'm in the nation." Basically, they are charging people to be fans....pretty unbelieveable but brilliant!

So all that aside....I think that having this rivalry is not a bad thing assuming that people don't get hurt or killed....oops...too late. It certainly makes the games more interesting and if folks are having a good time, what the hell. I will admit that some in the Boston area take the RS WAY to seriously....way too seriously. I'm not sure why that is, but it ain't healthy.

Doesn't surprise me...on Monday my wife and I did some food shopping at a Stop and Shop we usually don't go to. They wanted a quarter if you wanted to use a shopping cart! Had them all chained together and you had to put a quarter in to get a cart.

So we left. I'd more likely put a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger than pay for a shopping cart to put overpriced groceries in.

But most folks paid the quarter. So it doesn't surprise me that folks pay to be part of a fan club for a sports team they love. I'd more likely join the Red Sox fan club than pay a quarter for a shopping cart.

The Sox owners are great at marketing and have increased the interest in the team tenfold. It was not all that long ago that seats were not hard to come by at Fenway. Now you have to sell your first born to get tickets to a game. In addition to all the marketing hype, you need to figure that the Sox are competetive every year now. That was not necessarily the case with the old ownership. They spend the money on players and as a result, they fill the stadium and the team is in the race every year.

For the record, I am not a member of "Red Sox Nation" but I am probably more of a fan than half the people in the Nation.

I would probably just try and find someone that was returning their carriage and ask them for it. If I couldn't do that, then I would probably just pay the quarter and tell the manager where the quarter will be going next time. I just don't think it would be worth the effort to go to another supermarket, although I probably would not go back there in the future.

And some of those ideas have come in part from this guy:

Um, Jim...You get the quarter back when you chain it back in. It's a deposit to make sure there aren't any shopping carts floating around the lot.

Never seen that around here. Usually there are just corrals for the carts in the parking lot. I feel like most people would be too lazy to bring the cart back inside and would right the quarter off as a loss.

Some "less fortunate" will actually return all the carts that were not returned so they can get the .25 back....its just a way for the grocery to save money on help...one less job....its all about the bottom line now that Walmart's in the grocer game...oh yeah the TOP of it..grrrrrrrr

You can get a quarter back at the corrals too. They are little chains that have this small box. Each cart clicks into each other.

Here's a picture of one; This obviously uses a 50 Euro Cent piece and not a quarter.

It's been around here for a long time. I guess it comes with the territory. Here's another one I saw the other day. There's a Target in Brooklyn in this gigantic shopping center that they built right off the Belt Parkway. There is some sort of radio receiver built into each target cart that locks the wheels when it get too far away from the store. This keeps people from using the carts in Home Depot or BJ's.

This is just ridiculous....kind of like the short-lived supermarket that charged their shoppers for bags!!!

I disagree. In parking lots around here that have this system you see less carts blowing around and into unsuspecting parked cars. Unfortunately it's a necessity down here.

That coupled with the fact that homeless love to steal carts to carry their lives in...those things cost a TON of money...they go missing the store pays for replacement. I could see the need in NYC area for sure..I dont see it too much here in jersey yet, not at least in my area...

Beano, I never got that far in the process. The thought of needing a quarter to use a cart turned me off. And since it wasn't explained this way, we walked out and that store lost a customer. Frankly, if I knew that using a quarter was costing someone a job, I'd be even less likely to put a quarter in.

Anyway you slice it, lame.

Dont know if its necessarily costing a job per se...but it surely frees up someone who would otherwise be tending to carts in the parking lot...I guess in the long run that would mean they'd need one less staffer...so...

I agree with Jim on this though........its a lame practice...other than the theft deterrent I don't see the point..
