This camera just gets better and better...I can shoot video in black and white, color, etc. What would I be doing without it? I am up to about 4800 pictures and videos so far....

My only complaint with the Powershot video mode is the digital zoom sucks. My Panasonic SD video cam has a 10X optical zoom. It's a little herky jerky zooming in and out, but overall it's pretty good and stays nice and clear at 10x. The Powershots are great for stills, but the video is a little weak. That's not it's purpose really...

Right on. My intent was to get a step-above digital camera for skiing photos and some short vid. This camera really has delivered. The features are amazing. I find more and more stuff everytime I use it. When I hand it off to other folks to take a picture of me and JW, we find that the reaction is usually, "huh, this is a nice camera." Last week, one person said to me, "OK, let me find you--wow, a big LCD screen. Nice!"

When I first was playing with it, I was so excited to have a black and white feature. I use it A LOT especially on gray days....

that camera takes sweet pictures. i had a nice cannon a while back, but it stopped working after a trip. I think I was little rough with it. I end up on my butt to much for a nice camera that isnt waterproof or shockproof.

for people looking for something virtually unbreakable, you should checkout the Olympus SW series. They are Waterproof, Shockproof, Freezeproof, and Crushproof. You can drop them off a chairlift or throw them at people. You can even take a picture from inside a full beer! I have also dropped it on rocks and into a river. And actually, I throw it around at parties to scare people... it's a little thing I do.

The Olympus does not take the same quality of pictures as the Cannon so...

i have the 790SW, but here is a newer version (1030SW).

+1. I have the same camera. It has been submerged in 36 degree water for hours at a time, encapsulted in ice ect on boating excursions...the cold proof thing is OK. Works in the river, but at or below 10 degrees I have had some problems with battery failure...love the camera though, and it was very afforable.

Thanks for that input on the SW guys. Our Sony is starting to get up there in age and it doesn't always like to stay in "preview that pic you just took" mode. I've been wondering if there were any affordable digital cams you could skiing and not have to worry about them getting "hurt".

i have the same problem at really low temperatures. I try to keep the camera in a warm pocket, but not always ideal.

The lithium batteries just don't perform when they get too cold. Are AA battiers better? .. no idea though since I have always had cameras with Lithiums. With AA batteries, you can try alkaline or low-self-discharge (LSB) NiMH rechargables and maybe avoid the cold problems.

Anyone know about AA-based cameras in extreme cold? The Canon Axxx Powershot series (like the camera in this post) use AA.
