I'm confused. How do you put 2 good (not "great" but definitely "good") Western resorts up against any Eastern resorts? And if you do, why are the results of the poll not 100% for the 2 Western resorts? No Eastern resort can compare to either Steamboat or Canyonlands. Better snow, more consistent snowfall, better terrain and longer season. That can't be reasonably disputed so why doesn't that end the conversation? Am I missing something?

Easily explained. This is a Northeast forum and perhaps some of us (myself included) haven't skied the Canyons or Steamboat. I would think respondents to this poll, if voting for their favorite, will only vote for places they've been.

I hear ya' Greg and I didn't mean to come across as overly harsh. Believe me, I'm a big fan of Eastern Skiing and get a little testy when some snob tells me that Eastern skiing "sucks". It doesn't suck - it's a blast. That being said, it can't compare to out West. Tell ya' the truth, I haven't skied Canyonlands or Steamboat either. But I've skied alot of places out West and have yet to ski somewhere that isn't hands down better than any place back here.

I've only been to KMart, Attitash, Sunday River and Mount Slow. Having said that, I don't like any of them and I would only choose KMart because it is closer to good skiing than any of the others.

I wouldnt rush back to either place... But some people really like them!

It's a total epiphany for a person who's ski their whole lives in the East to go out West...

I totally agree with your last statement... :)

I can't remember which mountain it was, but they got into a contract-snaffu with Triple Peaks that was just settled...were going to sell a mountain but then pulled out at the last minute.

It was Steamboat. There was no contract snafu, ASC backed out(changed their mind) at the last minute. TP sued but lost. Rumor has it that they are not done with litigation.

I skied the Boat several times in the mid-70's when I was going to U. of Wyoming in Laramie. Enjoyed skiing there. I always felt it was the only "real" western ski town in CO.

I'll let you know after this winter when I fully utilize my ASC pass...

Never been out West either, so those excluded, consider my pre-vote as Kmart, but could easily change after my trip to the Loaf this winter.

On the Steamboat/ASC/TP thing, they're all done with litigation, I think- ASC had to pay a breakup fee to TP (couple million, I think), so they're all done now.

I've been to the Boat a few times. its not my favorite place out west but I've always had great skiing there. One time it snowed so much we couldnt get out of the condo in the morning and had to wait for a crew to dig a path from our door to the street to walk to the lift. had like 3 feet on the ground and a ten foot drift on the front door. had waist deep powder in the trees for days...and that was in early December.
it really is apples and oranges.

No big deal. once we called the desk, it took them 15 mins. to clear a path. This was an hour before the lifts even opened. if we slept a little longer, we wouldnt have even known we were buried.
I have/had a picture from that trip of my brother after a fall looking for a ski with just his head and arms sticking out of the snow. gotta find that shot.
