Who expected one of the better snow cycles of the season to happen the first week of April? Had a good stretch of skiing the second half of March and was patting myself on the back for my good timing since I had a bunch of commitments the first week of April and wouldn't be skiing. So of course this strange and mostly crappy season of 23-24 had to get another kick in the balls in before it's over.
My consolation was a day at Belleayre on 4/5. No 24" of snow there but it did snow for a few days and they got about 10" for the week. Coverage was top to bottom and side to side everywhere. No bare spots at all. Lower angle naturals were nice. Trees bony but all the snowmaking trails and the bumps were awesome.

It was Mike's first and last day of the season. Turned out to be a great day and we skied from bell to bell. Heading back tomorrow for closing day.

Closing my season by skiing on eclipse day! Finished my short but sweet cheapskate season of only 7 days at < $40/day. It is 7 days more than I had planned for. So I’m satisfied.

3/18-22, Spring Break:

* 3/18 (Monday) Bolton Valley $29 - Powder day (snowing during the day)

3/19 (Tuesday) Bolton $52 - Leftover powder

3/20 (Wednesday) Burke $15 - Powder Day (snowing)

3/22 (Friday) Middlebury Snowbowl $45 - Leftover powder everywhere

4/6-8, Eclipse weekend: Since total solar eclipse only comes at most once a decade, if not rarer, I decided it’s worth cutting a day of class and skip some homework

* 4/6 (Saturday) Pico $62 - Lots of leftover powder everywhere

# 4/7 (Sunday) Mont Sutton (CAD $49.50 = $33) Leftover powder in the glades

# 4/8 (Monday) Mont Sutton (CAD $49.50 = $33) Eclipse Day ( & corn harvesting too)!

* add $5 RFID

# split the “Spring pass” Sunday and Monday

(There were between 4-6 cross country ski days too, but I didn’t bother keeping track of them)

Closing day at Belle yesterday. Still a ton of snow left. Pretty good crowd for pond skimming despite the occasionally wet weather.

Pondering a trip up to K but pretty ready to call it a season right now. Other than the period from mid-March to April 10 when I got the majority of my great snow days in, I won't miss this season. The persistent "snow 2 feet then warm up and rain 2 days later" weather made for a disappointing year. Not close to 50 days. Took 2 weeks off from skiing end Feb to March 12. The skiing just wasn't worth it. One ski trip of 3 days; usually I find a reason to extend a ski trip, didn't do that once.

Nope, not gonna miss 23-24.

31 more days than I got :/

Think I should be able to get two more at K. Hopefully one day in the next week or two while there's still some variety, and then Memorial Day which I missed last year.

I think I've become too obsessed with quality days and it's caused me to lose too much of my season waiting around for the next storm to come around. I'll have to figure it out. But still time to at least break double digits on this season.

This is the balancing act for me as well. I try to ski every good snow day I can. There were just fewer this season so I skied less.

Myself as well. But as a comeback year I had a target. Most were good to great and some were about reuniting with friends. It's not always just about the skiing but people as well. Missed the last day at Belleayre which makes me a bit sad. Opened the mountain and wanted to close it. Got 3 more days lined up to finish out the year.

No complaints.

Missed over a week of fantastic spring skiing as I had to stay home with my little one who got sick, then I caught it from her.

Today did the Sunnyside at Alta. $20 lift tickets for 1.5 hours of skiing their beginner pod chair. Kind of a weird deal given the limited time, but I guess a pretty decent value. In any event, it was perfect terrain for her to try some slightly steeper green circles & worked out great. Snow was fantastic given the 10" that fell yesterday. Pic below is the little one with Mommy.

What did you think of the new 6-pack?

It was nice. My wife noted the seats were very cushy. Only got hung up with RFID once (I hate those things) where I had to take the ticket out and hold it to the gate. I like how Poma has the chair bar "teeth" (no idea what they're called) that go all the way to the seat for extra protection for little ones. I did think it odd that a beginner pod needs a 6-pack though, especially at Alta, but maybe they get more newbies than I'm aware.

It's a beginner lift and a shuttle lift to Supreme and Sugarloaf.

Can you expand on the “teeth”? Not sure what that means.

That's a wrap for 23-24. Son has a lacrosse game today and I'd have to pay cash to go somewhere tomorrow and the weather isn't inspiring enough to spend the money. Next weekend it's time to start getting the boat and fishing stuff ready to go for summer.

I don't keep track of days, but I'd guess low 40s. This year was challenging for the weekend warriors in the East. Seems like those with the flexibility to ski midweek had better conditions. Despite the down year for most of New England, it was still a great season for three reasons.

1. Having young kids who are just as passionate about the sport as you are. Children seem much less picky about conditions and always have fun. So if they're having fun, then so am I.

2. Getting into racing three seasons ago. I absolutely love it and because of that, I've learned to love recreational skiing even on boiler plate days. Ripping good carves on really hard snow is a challenge and tremendously fun to try and get better at. And I have. First two seasons I was ranked around 130 out of 425 in my league. This year I jumped up to 63rd. I'm hoping for continued improvement as a late in life entry into the sport. It's fun competing against many guys who were at minimum high level Highschool racers and a couple who were even briefly on the US ski team.

3. We visited a great variety of areas. Several new places for my kids and Owls Head a new one for all of us. Awesome mid sized area and cheap. We / I skied at:

Owl's Head
Jay
Bolton
Mt. Snow
Wildcat
Attitash
Cannon
Loon
Pat's
Gunstock
Sugarloaf
Saddleback
Black Mountain of Maine

Looking forward to 24-25 with hopefully better conditions and continued improvement by my kids and myself.
The key to having your kids ski in all conditions is for you not to complain about the conditions. When my kids were little I would just tell them to be a little more aware when skiing, it might be a bit icy. We also rarely if ever just dropped them off and didn't ski ourselves because conditions sucked. We might have left after a few runs but they skied with their group all day. They're now in college and will still ski in most everything.

Can you expand on the “teeth”? Not sure what that means.
They have these hard rubber 'U' shaped fingers that attach perpendicular from the bar down to the seat, but there are a bunch of them probably every 5 inches all across the six-pack so that there's no gap at all even for small kids to slide forward off the chair.

I hit 60 on a beautiful spring ski day at Solitude on April 19. That is 59 lift served and one day a few weeks ago when I did some low angle skinning for four hours in a snow storm.

It's been a very good ski season in Utah, not as crazy as last year, but consistently quite good and this includes April. Not so much new snow, but mostly good spring ski conditions, light freeze at night and nice softening during the day. Here are a few photos from recent weeks.

Easter Sunday, 30 March 2024, great powder conditions in the trees at Brighton, UT. I went to church later in the day :)

31 March at Snowbird was also a powder day.

2 Apr at Snowbird, still skiing winter snow conditions. This is an area called Silver Fox near the top of the tram line.

6 April was my last serious powder day, about 10" new.

10 April at Snowbird was a gorgeous day.

Mid-April has been mostly dry. This is a friend in Great Scott at Snowbird on the 12th. Somewhat firm, but chalky.

Guy flying Israel, Ukraine and USA flags in Brighton lot today, 15 Apr 2024. This was morning after Iran sent drones/missiles to Israel.

The terrain park at Solitude, UT on 19 April.

Solitude again, the ski areas are empty now except for a few retired geezers :)

I have about three more weeks of skiing out here, then I head back East.
