Thanks for the link, that was an interesting read for me. I guess the bottom line is there are pros and cons to every ski resort. Each individual just has to find the ones that fit what he is looking for the best.

Re: Whiteface is extreme...

Whiteface has been my favorite mountain since I first skied it several years ago. In about 20 trips over the past 5 years, I can tell you that every experience there is completely unique. I've had some amazing powder days and corn harvests there. I've also had some extremely challenging icy days there as well (on one trip, my experienced friend had to get roped out of the woods after a small spill because it was all blue ice everywhere).

If you want a posh, service-based, cookie-cutter experience, you won't find it here. This place is as rugged and rough and unpredictable as the Adirondack mountains can and should be. If you want to be challenged with varying alpine conditions, then this place is great. Regardless how great/horrible the conditions are, I've always found a great sense of reward and accomplishment in surviving a day at Whiteface.

To be honest, I can't determine which outting was better -- the day the forecast called for flurries and 6 inches were dumped between 10 am and noon, leaving first-tracks on every run, or the day the entire mountain demanded perfect edging technique because of a nasty ice storm that hit the night before.

Welcome ski_adk! Your "review" of Whiteface makes me want to visit even more!
