Let's do this thing !

Let's have a giant, free for all, no holds barred smackdown on which mountain range is the bestest of the best, and why.

How about weighing in on the ski areas themselves, the snow, the scenery, and the backcountry. Pros and cons. Maybe we should include an analysis of the beer and chicks, too. Then we can all start slinging mud, insulting eachother, and surfing on the edge of a thread lockdown. Rumble at midnight....12/31/06....on neutral ground at summit of some alleged mountain like Sugarloaf or Hunter (which, everyone knows, aren't even in mountain ranges that High School kids can name !). Let's go !

Of course there will be some fools out West who will weigh in on how their mountains, snow and chicks are cooler, but we'll beat them back with our clever responses and how they can't ski boilerplate....and all their chicks came from the East, anyways. Then we'll get back to squabbling amongst ourselves over questions which inherently don't have a right answer....like blondes vs. brunettes....which is funner than fun !

C'mon, everybody, we're going streaking ! (Will Farrell in "Old School".....not that I watched that juvenile pablum)

Alright Ill throw down.

Between the 3 Im going to have to go with the dacks. Terrain at both Gore and Whiteface is better than or on par with everything in the east except for Stowe. Backcountry options are also rediculously good, far better than what can be found in the Greens or Whites. Just look at a picture of the slides on Colden and youll know what I mean. The only thing they dont have going for them is they are pretty remote, but even the off piste options are sweet. Lake Placid is by far the best ski town Ive ever experienced.

Grew up in the Greens. Ski the Whites know. I like them better for hiking as well. Thaller1 You make friends easy, Maybe I could introduce myself sometime as well.

Central to northern Vermont gets 250"+ of natural snow. That's the big advantage over the Daks and the Whites since the steeper natural snow terrain is skiable more days per season and the mountains are laid out on steeper terrain. Whiteface only averages 168" of natural snow so the steep hike-to isn't open very often.

When the snow is good, I don't think it matters all that much. You'd never confuse any of the eastern sking with the Rockies or Utah.

Yes, they are.

Wildcat is part of the White Mountain National Forest, and Bretton Woods, while not WMNF land, is private land surrounded on all sides by the WMNF.

Shoot me a pm and we'll set up a date ;)

Forget myspace. I'm hangin here.

I agree with thaller1. There is no such thing as "best". One range may get dumped on one week and another range the next. Most people are always going to think that the mountains closer to them (when compared to similar sized mountains) are the best around. And it makes sense. Why would you drive 4 hours to get to a place that is just as good as a place 30 min away?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again- the best mountain is the one for which you're holding a lift ticket at the time. Period.

We'll just have to go with Arider's POV............he's obviously got the beta

Alright Ill throw down.

Arider: sounds like you really got all the points nailed. Hit all those ranges and have settled in on the 'dacks as best terrain and town that is tops too. Maybe when I wonder over to LP and WF you can show me around the hill some. Also, even though I am an old guy (over 40) I think I could probably struggle through those long approaches into the slides that you speak so fondly of. So, it would be great if you could show me some of that beta. I'll make sure I have a couple extra sets of touring skis with me so just in case your's are in the shop, you won't be out of luck and have to just go lift served. Yep, and I'll even throw in my buds splitter so we got all the bases covered. Also, I'll toss in a couple extra transcievers/shovels/probes and that way if a couple of the other Ad boys want to join (or Riv would like to come--I can always pick him up in the lowly greens on my way over) they won't feel left out. Looking forward to you showing me what all the hype is about
