This one hit home for me, Mary and Bobby are my neighbors, 2 doors down. Mary is doing great and should live a long happy life. Bobby is a cool little kid who rips on the hill and kicked Mr Miller's ass at golf, or so I was told. anyway it is nice to see him give back to my community.

Bode Miller is a busy man. In his busy schedule of training and travel, the 29-year-old world-class ski racer doesn't get a minute to breathe. But a call last spring from Bobby Moyer of Aspen got his attention.

"A bunch of kids have my number," Miller said. "I talk to 'em ... and they ask me questions about racing."

But Bobby's call was different. Bobby's mom, Mary Moyer, is recovering from cancer treatment last year. A big part of Mary's recovery, she said, was intensive training with the Cancer Survivor Center, which practices a new, proactive approach of fitness and improved diet.

Bobby called Miller to ask if he'd come out and support the cause by helping the center raise money.

"Either directly or indirectly," Miller said, "we're all involved with cancer." And recent numbers, he said, are alarming: "quadrupled."

The effort of places like the Cancer Survivor Center, Miller said, might help his own family in the future. And the skiing superstar was eager to help out.

At noon today, Bobby and Bode will get a chance to go toe-to-toe on the Snowmass Club golf course at a tournament to raise money for the center.

"I can't beat 'em at ski racing," Bobby said, "but maybe at golf."

The two spent time Friday watching rugby and in an interview on a local TV program.

"He's not stuck-up like other famous people," Bobby said.

Mary Moyer said Bobby is in the best of both worlds: "playing golf with his favorite ski racer."

Mary Moyer said she was impressed that Miller would come out in support of the center and spend nearly two hours Friday signing autographs in Aspen. Miller attended a cocktail party for the center last night, in addition to today's golf tournament.

He's been training hard here in Aspen, running the Roaring Fork - not the path, mind you, but skipping rock to rock to build agility at low levels of oxygen.

Miller declined to make predictions about the coming season. But he has hired a new coach and plans to travel the European circuit in a decked-out mobile home, which he says will improve his control of his environment and his skiing. A switch in sponsors too, he hopes, will give him an edge. Miller smiled and said he hoped his years of bad press were behind him.

Miller said Aspen's Cancer Survivor Center matches up with his theories of overall fitness and health.

"I support it 100 percent," he said.

He he.
He's a good guy, though. Nice of him to do that.

Lloyd, if you hadn't posted this I'll bet most of us would never have heard about this side of Bode. The media is determined to portray him as an out of control party animal who doesn't care. This just doesn't fit their profile of him.

Thanks.

Bode is the director of skiing at Bretton woods. I think its a symbolic thing, but he does show up upon occassion.

He did a fund raiser with the Nashua pride in Nh for charity this summer.

I think he is involved with this stuff more that people are aware. He just is not as famous for it.

I think his foundation is the turtle ridge foundation. I think the focus was on adaptaive ski programs. It was on az news a while back. Bvibert I'm sure would find this in a heartbeat.

Thanks for posting the article! I think the media has gone out of their way to make Bode look bad and he's really just a simple caring person..not eager to get caught up in hype..exactly why you don't always here about this sort of thing..

Yeah Bode!! :)

nice pic signing the skis for the kid. his foundation also helps kids. at this guy knows what is important, and it isn't looking good for the camera and being PC. rock on dude. role model or not, he makes a lot of kids happy and that is more than most celebrities do these days.

Bode & "Nice"

"Nice" doesn't sell newspapers, magazines, or make for good "promo's" on TV. "Fans" want juicey stuff. Most people like feeling "morally superior" to others, especially in regard to "personalities." "Hype" requires dirt or what some perceive as dirt. Sad but true.

Bode is an excellent role model. I was furious with the way he was ganged up on last year, by the hypocritical yet politically correct conventional media circus. (note: I don't recall the ski press jumping on him, just the mainstream crap. Remember FOX NEWS: FAIR AND BALANCED!)

Anyone who has followed ski racing over the past 5 years, knows Bode. He has alwasy been honest. (which provides fodder to the conventional media) He long stated attitude of competition for competition's sake, is what we all try (or should try) to teach our kids. BFD he said he was hung over the morning after he captured the most significant prize in his life's work.

I'm still pissed about this

Agreed.. When did ski racers suddenly go from crazy partiers living on the edge to straight laced athletes...? I "pine" for the days of old - when skiers were crazy partiers, skiing reckless and on the edge...

The sport just doesnt have the soul it used to...

That's what happens when the organizing bodies (FIS, Olympic Organizing Commitee) sell out to big corporations. Once marketing and money enter the equation, forget about soul.

NASCAR used to have soul in the 50's, 60's, and early 70's when drivers were ex-moonshiners and there was no safety equipment. People forget that the event that put NASCAR on the map was the Daytona 500 where Cale Yarborough and Bobby Allison had a fistfight on camera after a last lap wreck.

NASCAR today is as sterile as a hospital...the cars are just shiny billboards with corporate speak talking heads for drivers.

I emailed Bode a link to this thread.

I just want to post twice in a thread that might be read by Bode Miller. I've been a supporter all along, I'm just glad to have things that make it easier.

And no, I'm not all that athletic, but I am a supporter.
