I've used the spray Nixwak on my ski pants, it works ok...I was going to get the liquid you put in with washing machine, but the guy at EMS told me not to do that as it will also waterproof the lining and make your "breathable" liners now "unbreathable".....any thoughts?

I have heard the same...........

I heard the same thing. I use the spray on type and find it works well if you have a good place to apply it and let it hang dry. Then fire it in the dryer and anneal it with some heat and they work pretty well.

As for the next columbia pants. Can't help there. I use North Face, but that is because "North Face has been very very good to me". I think you might find a pr of Acteryex, TNF, patagonia worth the extra cash. They hold up so well, that they can be hammered for seasons.

I would wash it with Tech wash and then hit it up with Nikwax TX-Direct Spray On - not the wash stuff. I've seen good results with this combo.

Exactly what I did to my rain jacket last night - a decade old REI goretex. Good as new and ready for another season.

As terrible as this sounds, he's right. This used to be a really easy way to waterproof, but that idea backfired. I usually retreat once or twice a year depending on use. It's now a pain in the a$$ to do it....but essentially you use TX Wash or whatever it is called and then, using a clothes hanger, apply the treatment TX Direct in the spray form. Throw it into the dryer and you're done. It's just messier now because you have to spray the stuff onto the pants or a coat. Oh yeah...don't miss any spots.
