Hello, my name is Cole. I am a high school engineering student in Milwaukee, WI. I am part of an engineering project team in a capstone course called Engineering Design and Development.

As part of our capstone project, we are researching possible solutions to prevent the theft of skis and/or ski poles at ski hills, resorts, and mountains. We are in need of participants to complete our short survey. We would greatly appreciate responses from this ski community.

* All answers will remain anonymous and be utilized to justify the design and development of an anti-theft device primarily for skis and/or ski poles *

Below is the link to our survey:
https://forms.gle/mHki2jEgTesAXYbT9

P.S. Feel free to comment on your experiences or opinions on the topic in this thread- we would love to hear from you!

Hey Cole,
Why do your questions all require an answer IF I do not own a lock ????
You need to add N/A as another choice, or all your data will be flawed by folks being forced to pick an incorrect response just to complete the survey

Watched as my new skis were stolen right next the lodge window. BIL and I ran outside and followed the guys to a truck, then we took care of business.
:). (BIL played in the AHL)

Called security to report a guy unconscious and bleeding in the parking lot. Turns out he/they had 5 pairs of stolen skis and 2 boards in the truck. Stephens Memorial Hospital first then Oxford County Jail for that 19 yo douchebag. And YES they were from Mass

What mountain? If that happened today you would have been the one to go to jail and probably would have been sued afterwards.

Fat chance.
We met w/ both security and the State Police immediately after reclaiming the skis. The dude confessed to larceny of over $5,000 and implicated his 2 buddies who were by then hiding in the lodge. All 3 were arrested. For one it was his 2nd conviction in less than 2 months for theft of more than $5,000. He did some time in Warren

The police were ok with you and a professional hockey player beating a teenager unconscious, leaving him bleeding in a parking lot and causing him injuries severe enough he had to be hospitalized? Did he attack you first?

Former pro hockey player and YES, they did exactly that. The 3 of them jumped us when we caught them with many pairs of stolen skis. By the time security showed up he was up and stumbling around. He was checked out at Stephens and D/C'd. State Troopers asked both parties "who wants to press charges ?“ He sheepishly said NO and that he was sorry. Plus, Security and the Troopers had to then go find his 2 buddies who ditched him, and deal w/ returning skis & boards to 6 other parties. Turns out they were from MA and had been doing this all season, mostly in NH and ME.

For the last 20 years we now separate our skis when in the lodges.

I do this too, but only when I forget my lock. I used to love the locking Ski Key ski racks as the lock mechanism required is only about 2" x 1", but sadly they've gone the way of the dodo bird at most places for whatever reason(s).

Only time I've ever been victimized was at Jay Peak, I had a pair of those old-fashioned rubber sword pommel poles with no straps (I have no idea what they were called) stolen. I replaced them with Leki Trigger poles (I really hate straps) and never looked back, so that criminal did me a favor!

I'd say probably about half the times skis/poles are stolen it is by mistake. I remember one time my wife saw someone grabbing her board so we ran out there and the girl had the same board a rack over and just grabbed my wife's by mistake.

I have boutique skis that would be difficult to replace w same graphics etc (J Skis...). I always separate my skis, usually with a buddy so people don't see a random individual ski on the rack.
