Doesn't Stowe being open until 4/27 this year negate the rumor that has often been floated that they were forced to close earlier per the terms of their forest service lease?

A couple years ago I looked at the lease and no where in the lease could I find a stipulation of when the mountain needs to close…..

Heh...I did that as well in the past and couldn't find it either. But I didn't know if I found the latest version of the lease or not or if there were amendments that weren't public.

Still interesting that was often used by some people as the justification to defend their early closing. Also pretty ironic that under Vail ownership is when they finally stay open later!

In my experience it seems like Stowe is trying to be a bit more independent under the Vail umbrella. This past weekend they did a weekend bash with live music and brought back the pond skimming contest which they haven’t had in a long time. They are more lenient in trail openings and now they extended the season. All good moves in the right direction….

I wonder too if there isn’t a more active April ski clientele that helps justify the extension. Not to mention snow depth.

I guess I won't be seeing you and the Slug this year on Steins then.

Guessing also that having a GM, who it isn't his 1st GM role. and who was also a regional manger for Vail prior to coming to Stowe for some of their midwestern properties, helps when it comes to advocating for things. Plus having known Mike for about a decade now, and getting to catch up with him over a beer in February when he was at the NSAA East show at Mount Snow, his desire to create a fun experience for folks, in whatever reasonable way possible, hasn't decreased at all. Guess that the bulk of the Stowe employees will like his leadership style as well

You have to wonder too if having multi-million dollar lodging at the base of Spruce that Vail doesn't control is driving s me of this as well. I personally would be pissed if I had invested that type of $ into a ski home and Vail came in and ran the area like crap.

Lots of Vail mountains brought back pond skims and live music this year. It was a corporate wide initiative like nearly everything Vail does.

Don't think anyone's going to complain about vail actually trying to make skiing at their mountains fun

That was nonsense.

And I think it's smart for Vail to keep an east/west place open late to funnel folks for marketing purposes to drive perceived value from their EPIC pass purchase.

That said, these companies are also to blame for people not skiing when spring conditions are less than optimal. I think spring skiing's more a ghost town than it used to be.

Meh...I've always found spring skiing crowds to be highly variable. Get a beautiful day and there will be a good crowd. Get cool temps, clouds, rain on a weekend...ghost town. People are just pickier in the spring (myself included).
