Normally when the roads are bad, I play it safe and wait till they get better.

This past saterday however, I had to be up at Jiminey at 8 am to open up the shop there. Normally takes me 1.5 hours to get up there. This sat. I decided to leave an hour early, and if early get some breakfast. I take the Taconic-295??-22-43. Lower part of the Taconic looked like a plow never touched it 10-15" on the roads. A plow pulled out and was scraping the entire road. All he was leavin was ice, and struggling to keep it straight. Couldnt pass as the thruck was runnin the boom plow all the way out sweepin 2 lanes. Finally he pulled off and was able to open it up.

In the end it took 2.5 hours to get to the mountain.

BeanoNYC - you mean Route 7? Yeah, it's a bit odd, but we were traveling with friends who live in the city and in NJ. Also we were staying at a place exactly on Route 7 so it was a better option for us.

Makes sense then. I go through CT and Mass.

summertime worst

I am pretty ok driving winter- my worst driving conditions were in the summer in Burlington about 25 years ago. There was a tornado confirmed as touching down in the very north end. I was playing in a softball league and our game was right on Malletts Bay with views straight over Lake Champlain toward Plattsburg. The clouds were huge, black/blue and rolling like towering tumbleweeds towards us/Burlington. Ump saw lightening and it didn't take long for the teams to realize something big and bad was coming. I was driving right through it in a little Toyota Starlet. The driving rain and blackness all round me coupled with the ROARing of the wind was terrifying. It lasted only a few minutes, but I thought I was a goner. The sun came out and there were trees, limbs, wires and stuff everywhere.

The worst, yet most fun, was crossing from Miami to Bimini during a Tropical Storm (just barely missed becoming a Cat 1 Hurricane) on a 65' sloop in 1992. There were 12-15 foot swells, obviously high winds, and some serious driving rain and hail. Everyone was up on deck, as the potential to capsize was pretty strong. It was really cool being the only passenger (non-crew) to not be :puke: ing the whole way.

Another white knuckler was attempting to land at Owen Roberts airport during a bad storm. The pilot tried 3 times to put the 737 down, and had to pull-up at the last second every time. The fog/rain/visibility was so bad, that you couldn't see the runway until we were about 50 feet away from it. The pilot ended-up flying to Montego Bay, Jamaica because he didn't have enough fuel to try another pass. After re-fueling, we were able to fly back to Grand Cayman and the storm had moved off. We should've just gone back to the states as that would prove to be a bad omen. By the end of the week, we had to wait through a Category 4 Hurricane (Michelle) before going home.
