Greetings AZ,

I am headed to Sunday River next week for my first time ever. Any way I can get some advice from you guys on the place? I'm looking for ideas on apres' ski, places to eat, sights to see, places to get a drink, insider advice, etc? Sorry; I know that's a wide open thread, but I'm hoping the people in the know can do some better brainstorming than I can for myself
:p Thanks for any help at all and I hope all of you are having as good of a season as I am.

I'm a every weekender. If you send me a pm next week i'll grab run with you if you like. Readers digest. Durign the day and right after apres ski. barker bar is where alot goes on.

Matterhorn ski bar www.matterhornskibar.com is my favorite apres ski place. grigo harry's in fall line condo complex the best place for a high end dinner. Coco butter steak is un- real. use the mountain explorer or on mountin shutle no need to drive and if you do just a bad idea.

Steeps white heat chair. Crowds Barker. North peak and aurora nice terrain least amount of people. jordan great early.

Should get you started.

sorry matterhorns site is down right know.

Don't cross linc mch, but this is worth of a view. Many of the same poepl, just SR concentration.http://www.sundayriver.com/community/index.php?

I agree on hitting Jordan Bowl early. Beautiful terrain over there. Even if you're an expert, take a run down Lollapalooza, it's a wide open hoot with great scenery as well as a really nice glade (Blind Ambition) alongside. The blues (Rogue Angel and Excalibur) are excellent, and if you really want an experience get up on Oz and come down those ungroomed, scattered-tree, moguls-the-size-of-volkswagens trails. Jordan is my favorite part of SR, and given that the only way there is a lot of traversing and/or the up-and-down lift (or staying at the Jordan Grand), it won't see many people first thing in the morning.

In addition to what was said by others, if you get there early I like to start at Barker Mtn as you can park close to the lodge unlike the main base area and it is asy to migrate around the mountain.

The micro brewery on the corner of the access road and the highway (US 2) has pretty good food and drink.

If you're a carnivore, be sure to hit Bob's barbecue trailer right outside the Good Food store on Rt. 2 (in front of the Irving gas station after you leave the access road). Great links and pulled pork. Eat in your car or in your condo.

Make either Barker or White Cap your base of operations. South Ridge can get crowded though this is where the rentals and ski school are. SR has 8 peaks and each one has its own characteristics --

White Cap has the steeps (White Heat, Shockwave and Obsession). Barker, Spruce and North Peak have nice cruisers. South Ridge is the beginner area. Aurora has long trails and is uncrowded. Oz has the "natural" trails. Jordan has long trails, is uncrowded and has a great pitch. If you like interesting but not scary glades, hit Blind Ambition or Last Tango.

You can stay away from the cross trails by planning your journey across the peaks. Have a map handy. I hope you meet some of the SR regulars like BobR and thaller. They're good people.

Welcome to the River!

I second Matterhorn.

The Phoenix is good as well.

The Bethel Inn offers some good variety for food and bevs...either pub or formal...

You need to ski Jordan Bowl at least once.

If you are a low expert, you need to give White Heat a shot...in the early morning though....

And did I mention Shockwave???

Best Lodge: 'Bah-kah' because of location and vibe......very old school and down to earth. South Ridge is just a zoo...

Park in the secret lot above the north peak chair and ski down. Run into white cap and get tix on the way. No rules, no traffic, no parking attendents, ski-ski out.

One of my co-workers typically parks where you describe, though I think you meant ski down to Southridge, not White Cap. Maybe not, perhaps you like to start your day with a long, long traverse before you buy a ticket

Apparently they've been cracking down this year on that lot, preventing day trippers from parking there.

Yes, I would buy the ticket on the way in at white cap (think drop off area) and then park in secret lot and get directly on north peak quad. Parking at Jordan can work too but they don't like that either I think.

They don't let you in the secret North peak area anymore. Been turning folks away they have a security guard from 7.15 on by the Maines handicap center. At least on Sat and Sunday Can't pass with out a parking pass.:snow:

Big thread on it on the River board. alot of un happy folks. My view of it is different.grin::

White cap is the easiest place to park these days as long as you don't need rentals. (that is if you are not a pre 7.45 arrival person) rentals then you have to go to south ridge. About of the front lot at South ridge is know vallet parking. Gets crowded.

Barker is my favorite place to park. got to be there by 7.45 on a weekend to get a spot. Barker is where folks hang out

Trail side parking options I'll give you via a pm. if you want one. Kind of like secret powder stashes. Folks will get angry.
