Stratton 4/19/08

Quickie report because I'm heading to bed. The place was almost completely groomed out (what was open). The surface was mostly spring corn with some wet slush and puddles thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately I didn't come across the one section of open trail that was left un-groomed until after lunch sometime. There was a nice line of bumps on skier's right of Upper Standard that ran pretty much the whole length of the trail. Once I found that I stayed there, the only PITA was having to traverse all the way back over to the Ursa lift just to get back up to hit them again. All in all the coverage was pretty good, there were several dirt spots on many trails but it was mostly edge to edge and where the was snow there seemed to be plenty of base. It was melting quickly though with water rushing down the mountain pretty much every where, including under and on top of the trails. It occurred to me at one point that no matter where I was when I stopped I could always hear water running somewhere.

After skiing there I can see what you guys mean. I would like to go back at some point during winter to get a better feel for the place though.

I was at Stratton on Saturday and the traverses back to the Ursa lift and the American Express were getting mushy and some pond skimming was involved near the lifts. Most mountains require traversing in the Spring when there are only a few lifts running. Stratton had great coverage, cheap lift tickets and the ski patrol was good about letting people duck ropes to ski bumps on trails like Bear Down, Lift Line and Slalom Glade.

I wish I had known you were up there, it would have been nice to hook up for some runs. There was definitely plenty of pond skimming to be had, even in the middle of some of the trails. I wish I had known that ski patrol was cool about letting people duck ropes, I would have had more fun that way. I thought about it, but being by myself on a new mountain I thought that ducking ropes probably wasn't the best idea.. It was still a fun day, I just could have used some more interesting open terrain.
